five top hounds you ever saw run

Post by carn »

after traveling all over the us here my list you old timers like me think hard you young people wont have to think so hard

1 larsens native girl (a very special hound that knew how to tell time she would always get that last score to bet you)

2 larsens suzy( speed to spare could leave a pack wondering were she went)

3 bruners lucky( i judged and ran against her all over this country in all kinds of conditions and she was always on her game)

4 crains hh war bonnet( i judged her several times but one time in indiana she put on a show i wish everyone could have saw i told the guy judging with me if that rabbit makes one more circle she going to catch it and thats what she did that one and two others in that cast)

5 buster bradly ( dog #5 at cherryland he wore out a pack of 52 big males allday long me and my running buddies just call him dog #5 and we all now who were talking about)

Carl
I have to agree 1) Larsen's Native Girl The best I ever saw run bottom line. 2) Bruners Lucky Rough, but absolutely rabbit smart. 3) Green Bay Shooter Put on a SHOW in 4 ft of snow. The best snow hound I ever saw. 4) Dog #5 (Buster Bradley) Finished that day at 7 years old. Every line but 2 was him leading the pack. 5) Shawnee Creek Ike (I hate to say it) Hunted with and ran against him for years. Put on a show at Trenton going across the gravel and blacktop in mid-summer. Almost as UGLY as his owner.

Not necessarily in this order:

Denny's Blue II - In the opening round of Grands at the 02' World Hunt. He ripped everything. There was only one dog that could run with him and she ran him. She never had enough time to look for a check. He dominated that cast so bad that some of the big wigs in held an unofficial meeting with some of the judges in the dining hall. They complained about the dog so much they never saw me sitting at the table eating a sandwich and drinking a coke. They did not want him to repeat as the world hunt winner. He didn't but I would have fed him any day.

Crain's HH Maggie Mae - This dog was feared in LP up and down the east coast from NJ to Pa to MD to VA and OH. The owner was black balled by local judges in the PA area where he lived due to writing an article about judges that cheated. I was then able to bring her to VA. She con't win and get cheated. I attended a trial in PA, while running Maggie in the Champion class. It was hot, and the other 4 dogs would not hunt. Maggie flushed a deer from a thicket surrounded by a huge field. The deer bolted past the other 4 dogs, handlers, judge and spectators. The 4 non hunting champs were in tow. Maggie looked at them in disgust as if she were saying, "I know you're not going to run that!" An hour and a half later two dogs returned. The other two were found the next day. Maggie did not go nor did she open on the track. Check this, the judge placed the two returning dogs in front of Maggie. Maggie could beat you from the front, middle or back of the pack, not to mention that she was an A-1 gun dog

Cody's Sharp Mikie - Back in the early days this dog ran with a speed of 8 on a scale of 1-10. His head would be 5-6 inches off the ground. This dog thought like a rabbit, he could make checks that other dogs over ran by 20 yards. He would look at the check area as if he could see the track the rabbit left. He was truly dominant in his running style.

Crain's HH Smoker D - Probably the quickest dog that I ever owned. He was very competitive, he would swing and cut to get to the front and he could hold it once there. There was a many of trials that the judge would say go get that dog he's on a split. Only to find out he had the same line and was advancing it while the other dogs were thinking about what to do. At 3 when he came to my kennel he dominated packmates until 11 or 12 years of age . He wasn't trialed until he was 8 and easily made nkc champion. He is 15, retired and is making more babies than I have. I can't count the number of times that he has run the rabbit to the gun while the pack was trying to figure out which way he went.

McKnights Crazy Jane - This girl could go! She had the entire package, speed, nose, mouth, brains. She was one tuff cookie! While other dogs were thinking about what to do, she was doing it. I'll always remember the butt kicking she gave me. There were only 4 dogs that impressed me at the 02' World Hunt and she was one of them.

JRK A Touch from Heaven Angel - She was owned by Jacob James of OK. I saw this dog just dominate a pack of very good champions at the world hunt. For the first 30 minutes she scored every jump and strike and every check. She then got on a 20 minute split. And was returned for the last 5 minutes of the cast. She won! The entire cast was in uproar. The other 4 handlers couldn't understand how a dog could be gone for 20-25 minutes and win. Easy, when she was with the pack, she scored everything, when she was on a split the scoring was spread around with none of the 4 dominating. Angel will always hold a special place in my memory.

Thanks for the compliment Jane. Back in the day I was a free lance writer for the Rabbit Hunter magazine. When it changed hands, well, so did I. In the future I look forward to writing a book or books about rabbit hunting with beagles and deer hunting with dogs.

Again, Thanks

My list may be a bit weird, but I'm going by those hounds I've seen run the most that really stood out, so I included 2 of my own, sorry, lol:

Mark Ross's "Rocksie Girl." I watched this bitch win a trial with a mechanical hip (she'd been hit and repaired). I've never seen a big bitch run so fast and accurate in my entire life. She had 9 gears and used them all.

Surber's "Logan Elm Blue Skim." One of the most intelligent uses of good foot I've ever seen. He was pure, controlled power.

Dan Kane's "Happyrun Zig." Knows how to use his speed and power, he is extremely sure-footed in rough and various terrain, almost like he plans where he's going to put his feet 5 leaps ahead of time, which usually puts him about 30 yards ahead of any pack. He's a wind-scenter and can run full-out, but he will drop his nose when need be. He excels on both hare and fox.

My "Odell's Goff Mtn Dolly" bitch (a cousin to Skim). If I didn't adore her talent and brains, I would never have fed her and bred her this long. She's high-octane, aggressive, yet always around the rabbit. I almost didn't finish her in the field in ARHA because she was known as the "Queen of the 9-Second Check." She's run down and killed her share of rabbits.

Cottontail Blues Rowdy. Gone too soon, but he was pure murder on a rabbit - wouldn't touch anything else, ran 90% of the line, and nobody wanted to judge him, lol. They couldn't stay up. Rowdy had 4 wins towards his Grand Rabbit Champion title by the age of 22 months, and placed 9th in the ARHA World, Champion class of 225 dogs in 2001 at the age of 2.
