Line breeding-Whats to close?
I sold a double Turbo female because i bought a Male directly out of Prop. I actually though that it was to much turbo to try and breed them. Well, long story short i have the female agian and wanted to get some opinions on how close is to close to line breed!
Take a look at this pedigree and let me know what you guys think. I have only bred one litter myself, but i'm wanting to run my Turbo line as tight as i can without getting deformed pups, etc...Any advice from all of you breeders would be nice....thanks ahead of time,
Steve

Your Turbo prop male is in the exact same places in the pedigree as Penny Royal Patch Casey was when I bred Sugar Ridge Patch Ivory to Don's Buckeye Patch. He was the Grand sire on top side and double Great grand sire on the bottom side.
This means nothing as to what you might get, but it worked well for me. Those who have bred the Prop blood close could give you a better notion.
Best of luck...Patch
Sorry I was wrong, yours is double grand sire on bottom, not great grand sire.

i bred to a patch male last year n his mommy was also his grandma he is awsome lil hound i got one female off the litter n one day im gonna breed her back to her daddy i know alot of people dont approve of crossing this close but i like both parents real well n the pup is awsome to only be 14 months old with no (glaring) faults im not a bit afraid of getting deformed pups what i belive i will get is more of the same or better, so what if i have to cull a few i always do anyway jb
.
JUST AS JOHN SEES IT

breeding close can speed up the process but you better be willing to cull hard. ive had alot of bredings closer than that you either get some thats really good or really dumb. some of the best crosses ive made have been father x daughter crosses.

when it comes to breeding nothing is off the table. just got to be willing to cull. got to think outside the box or comfort zones. the father daughter crosses ive seen have worked. all dogs and lines are different some can handle tight breeding and some lines cant. the ultimate deciding factor with any breeding program is time.

I wouldn't pay any attention what so ever to the so called relationships of the dogs. These negative thoughts and supposed taboos spring forth when we apply our human relationships to our hounds.
What is really important is how the genes line up and the resulting genotype and phenotype.
Don't get hung up on the "relationship". Always follow the ability in you breeding and don't worry about if they are a cousin, aunt niece,etc.,etc. FOLLOW WHERE THE ABILITY TAKES YOU.

Shady, I like that quote. I agree, forget about how they are related and breed for ability. If both dogs share common traits you will most likely get more of the same, good and bad.
I never understand why everyone says "be willing to cull" when talking about close breeding. Don't you cull a bad dog if it comes from an outcross? From my experience, you will have to do less culling when line and in breeding than you will when outcrossing IF, and this is a huge IF, you do a good job selecting for ability.
I've made several father/daughter, mother/son, half brother/half sister crosses and never had one born with two heads or anything like that. If both dogs have lots of what you are looking for, you should get some good pups. If either one is lacking something, having Turbo stacked up in the pedigree won't put it in the pups.
