Best Grade dog

Post by Big Dog »

I hunted with a dog named Slim Jim owned by a guy in Charles City VA back in the 80s that was the real deal. He could get it done day in and day out, he was a super jump dog and could tote the load. In NC a one eyed red female named Sandy owned by Bill Peeler, she could fly and would jump every rabbit in the woods. As soon as the gun went off she would sniff the rabbit and have another going in minutes. She was the real deal. Trial dog wise a dog name Sangamo Rik Rak owned by Strike Jump Kennels was one bad azz SOB a couple of years ago at the World Hunt, he could dominate. Slick owned by Ron Eades was also a powerful dog, I judged him several times and that big black and tan could roll.

Grch Perkins Run-n-Gun Hammerin Hank, was one bad kat back in the day, still dishing it out when ran.He was the kind of dog that they didn't want to draw at the local hunts. He was in 4 hunts from open to champion finishing to champ with 3-1sts and a 6th,in champion class took 8 hunts to grand with 5-1st and the other 3 never less the 4th place. He could get it done under the gun also, day in day out.He has looked awfully good at the big 5 level but just cant get that break he needs

I would be interested to know if ya'll don't mind telling, where these grade dogs came from and what did you know about them if anything of their sire and dam?

Sometimes a result of a breeding of a grade dog to an AKC dog, or outstanding grade dog?

Were they bought at a trade day, found on the side of a road, etc.

Heck, I had one stolen years ago that I understand went to a dog pound, and was picked up and trialed and made a good one, famous I heard!!!!

ALL dogs at one time were "Grade" dogs until they closed the AKC registry.. ;) How many Grade dogs have won the LP world hunt?
I think this will make for good discussion

Hank was a product of Rch Boothills Buster(FC Branko's Bull Durham x Branko's Lu Lu) AKC reg and championed in little pack, hard hunting male and a gun dog deluxe,NO trash, all buisness, great mouth used honest and strong foot on the track, never trialed till 5 coming 6 yr old and held strong against younger hounds.

A good friend of mine owned Grch Coal Harbor mt Julie, ARHA registered only, great hunt ,super nose and could run a rabbit as if tied to it.Seen her run on blacktop before, the pack would many times run off and leave her but when it came to the hard bare down and grip checks she would nail it and save the race, great gun dog.She is dead and gone now as is buster but memories of hunts with those to will live for ever in my mind.

So neither of these two were found on the side of the road or bought at the local trading post, just two gunhunters looking to make a good cross.

Mitchell bearfield on here has a good 1, but Her Daddy Ole Squeak was the best I had seen for a long time.
He could find rabbits when others couldnt, and would Grub that 5 minute check out. You just didnt lose many rabbits with him.
I sent him to PA. The man that owns him treats him like a king.

If you picked one up off the road, it could be triple champion AKC bred and registered and be grade to you. Same as pups from trade days. AKC papers seldom go with pups sold there, but are sold separately in a year or two. Sad, but true!

There are some great grade dogs and great breeders out there that folks never hear of because they don't trial, but, who cares. They don't!

Most dogs down here are grade. There are some good AKC dogs to hunt with, I've seen some, but not many. Folks here prefer the odds on pups out of a hunters good grade dogs.

Bought a young grade dog from a dog trader in mountains of Tennessee, called him Rooster because of his mouth that is about 12 now and still a hunting dog. Swamp dog deluxe. Famous in local folks minds. Plenty of pups and grand pups out of him around this part of the country.

Good one Brad.

I have had some good ones and hard for me to say which was better but old lucy is 11 years old now and I still start pups with her. She was the best jump dog for sure that I have ever hunted with, would tree, retrieve, good check dog and good on the track. I had a an old man offer me 1400 for her and her sister when they were about 16 months old. Needless to say Whitey died last easter and old lucy is in the short rows for sure and I will sure miss her when she's gone. Both were RABBIT DOGS and neither ever ran ANYTHING but a rabbit.
