deer breaking

I was told that I should use deer breaking scent to break my dog of his problem .the way I was told to use it is by putting it down his nose a couple times a day to make him hate the smell .will this work ,thanks

Breaking scents never worked for me. I used to ride around in the late afternoon with the trainees collared up deer hunting. Most of the time I could find a deer or twenty near the road and turn the dogs out near by. I never called them I just let them get a nose full start to run then the E- collar did the rest. It usually only worked once an afternoon. The best thing would be to correct off deer then go run a rabbit, but that is easier said than done.
E collar conditioning should be done before you do this. I think you are building rules and yard training with the here command and a check chord makes sure that the corrected dog does not run to the next state when the sparks start flying.
Then the real test is will they turn one down when another dog is burning one up. Just my opinion but the scents are worthless for breaking.

But how do you stop one from going with other dogs chasing deer? I would have sworn my little gyp would never chase another deer after being "fried all the way to the truck", but she did. If she's out alone or with others that won't chase deer, she turns them down. But if another dog does go after one, she's right in there with them.

Pressure breaking. A local guy has a beagle here that will run a deer for 10-15 minutes and then quit on his own. People send their hounds to him for a few sessions and they usually stay cured. He drives around until he sees deer, lets the deer dog out and lets him start to roll it, then turns the trainees loose. They hark in, they get the treatment. He then takes them somewhere else and lets them hark in on a rabbit race and they continue to run rabbits for the evening. He keeps them until they go to the deer dog, turn it down, and go back hunting for a rabbit.

IMO if they will hark in on a deer race then they are not deer broke. Sometimes with young hounds the pressure becomes to much. Another blast or two with the Tritronics should fix that problem.
I have tried everyway from putting deer scent on a pad on the hounds collar to putting it on a deer hide in a 55 gallon barrel and rolling it down a hill with the hound in it. In most cases you are wasting your time. In the other cases you may just make your problem worse. In 40 years there has never been a better tool then the "Ol Electricity"

I don't know about pouring anything down it's nose. That sounds kind of scary to me. Might mess up their nose or something. I know if I get water up my nose or something i'd be coughing and who know's what else.

the guy says it is like pepper up our nose and they get over it in a couple hours and it work on his dogs ,so I am told

Dog will still run deer, but won't have anything to do with a 55 gallon barrel.

My $.02 on this is only hunt young dogs with shock collars and only hunt them with dogs you know will not run deer. Deer breaking scent, Rabbit training scent, what part of the deer or rabbit does this scent come from??

Hunting young dogs today without a shock collar, with all the deer around, can turn into a long day hunting dogs..

Jim how's the back? Lots of us hurtin', but not quite bad enough to get something done about it. I guess I would have to be down to can't quit hollerin' to let them doctors mess with me.

On the deer breaking, sometimes you can't. I ran one last night that has been shocked off deer many times, and she did it again. Anybody wanna buy a deer dog?

Back is doing real well. I've been cut on so much that I'm starting to enjoy it. LOL
I have a hound that I got when he was almost three years old that I can't get broke either. Had I got him when he was younger I probably could of broke him. He is bred the best but got to go........................... anyone want to buy another deer hound?
