Does anyone think using cedar lumber for a kennel would effect hounds sense of smell ?

I've heard various beaglers say things like that, but I use cedar chips for bedding in my dog houses and in my dog box. I have never had any trouble with my hounds running rabbits. So, no, it will not affect their sense of smell.

I have to disagree with you Beagleman, but I did have some hounds adversely affected by cedar bedding...I was informed that this might be the reason my hounds weren't hunting as well as they should have been. I switched from cedar bedding back to straw and my dogs went back to their old hunting selves in about 2 weeks. Could be just a rare case, but I believe it can happen. Tony

I use cedar chips for bedding in my dog houses and dog boxes. Havent had any bad effects from the cedar. I would probably use straw but I put it in their houses once and when I checked it a couple of days later the straw was wet. Ive heard other people say the same thing about straw. It sweats really bad for some reason. It may be caused by the climate of my area

I've used cedar bedding for years now I haven't seen any different in my dogs. I use straw in the winter months, but I change to cedar bedding to combat fleas and ticks use now I haven't had any problem with. Chuck
