I've had a few, they hunt pretty well, some are a little slower, some faster. Some may take longer to start than a beagle. I like 'em.

I have had two in the past 30 years, so I am far from an expert on this cross. With that said, The one's i owned were very good gun dogs, were much faster then one might think, hunted hard, and would drive a rabbit, with beautiful bawl mouths. My issue with the one's i had was handling, both were males, and hard headed as heck. Back in the day, we never heard of a training collar. Good luck.

My very first dog was a beagle basset cross that my dad got me as a pet...he was a pet until my dad came home from work one afternoon and the dog was running a rabbit, lol. I wish I had a whole kennel full that could run like that little guy could.

My first rabbit dog was a beagle/bassett cross that I got when I was 10 years old. I have many fond memories hunting with him after school in the late afternoon; early evening.
He was faster than most bassetts I've seen, but slower than many beagles. He sure could move a rabbit, though!
I hope you enjoy your new beagle/bassett as much as I enjoyed mine!

well me and my son zack took our pups in the yard to drag rabbits around to se how well they would track mine is a reggie gyp she is doing killer for 10 wks she is tracking 25 ft and growling at the other pup when she gets near the bunny well the beagle/bassett is showing some interest but she is only 5 1/2 wks she tracked one about 6 ft we let her chew on it alittle and thats the lesson for today I am hoping to prove my hubby wrong and her become a decent hunting dog ;)

Good luck with your pups, and it's good to see you have those young fellers started on the right track too. Way to go.
