Yotes at my running grounds.....

Well the season is over here in MO so it's back to just running dogs. So I went to my usual spot that I run from now till early spring then I run them somewhere else during the summer months. Give you an Idea of how it is. This place is just under a 1/4 mile long and 200-300 yards wide. Thick woods with some thickets and one small open field. A small gravel road leads you inn and runs along the entire property. So I drive inn and walk with the dogs trying to get the first rabbit up. It took the dogs 45 minutes to jump the first bunny. Last year it took about 5 minutes. So they run it for just over an hour, the run was a little off because of the snow and ice on the ground but they kept it on the move. Well out of no where I see something moving in the middle of the gravel road then another thing. At first I thought it was deer moving out then I look again and sure enough Two HUGE COYOTES. I rounded up the dogs for fear of them being attacked. I got three dogs. The fourth never showed up. I kept calling and calling for about 45 minutes. I saw the coyotes again this time they were staring at me from a distance. I walked toward them and they took off running across a field away from the woods. I went in looking for my dog thinking I was going to find a dead or seriously injured dog. I called and called again then i spoted her. She was working a scent. I put her on a leash and went home.

Now how can I kill these rabbit eaters. They have eaten all the rabbits there.

I can not shoot on this property so is there another way to kill them with out a gun.

I have had pretty good luck with snares. Sure doesn`t take them yotes long to clean out an area.

You're going to have to trap or poison them. You'll have to be carefull w/ the poison b/c whatever eats it will die, yote, dog, cat, etc. I ran into the same problem this summer, except one of my dogs wasn't as lucky. I had my 3 fastest out stroking a rabbit, been running him for 45 min. then they were attacked. Well, one was anyway. He got it bad, needed stitching up on his neck, ear, and front right shoulder.

Try snares. We've used them here with great success. We have caught a couple coon dogs but if a dog has been lead broke, when they feel snare tighten around its neck, they quit pulling and sit down. Wish ya the best.bg

Joey, now that trapping season is out you have only hunting or shooting to take care of them unless you can convince the local game warden to give you a permit to trap them out of season. If this happens you can use a cable restraint which is just a fancy name for a relaxing snare. This will do no harm to domestic animals as long as it's used in a nontangle situation.I doubt if the warden will issue a permit ,though, just because the yotes are eating the rabbits.

A older gentleman told me the best poison is tobacco. He said to get a bag of cheap tobacco and soak it in warm water, add some stew meat and let it sit for a day or two, wrap pieces of stew meat in hamburger and sit it out. I don't know if this really works or not but the guy said it causes their hearts to explode. I know that I read one time that a person was convicted of poisoning their neighbors dog, article said that bakers chocolate was used. I still say that all beaglers should hunt yotes one day a week, I have shot a bunch of them this year. A call box and a 22-250 does a heck of job on them.
