Re: males or females
In my opinion females are less stubborn and easier to kennel. As far as hunt, I have always heard that females hunt better. I don't know if I agree. My hardest hunting dog happens to be a male.

Re: males or females
I've always liked females but when you get a good male that really wants to please, you've got a "year round hound", no heat cycles. On percentages tho...I'd say females, on being biddable.
As for trials a big named dog can smoke anything, male or female...
Look at the percentages in the HOF or grand awards...I thing the males have it...tough to keep the female cycles from holding you down & keeping you under lock and key...

Re: males or females
I have a Female ( Evans Lady in Red ) she is a grand and made it there pretty fast! But she does come into heat at the wrong time of the year that is a big draw back.
I just bred her to Honeyrun Ozzies Ozark Toby so she will be down until the first of the year but I think it will be well worth it for me! ! !

I like females. They are just better all round dog.In the dog box at home. They hunt just as good as tha male. But I think they mind better.I try this about 15 years ago.Had all males for five years. Then try females.Would not have a outstanded male if you give it to me.Unless its what I call a jump dog.Have all females now for 10 years.

Big Smokey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like females and males. I rather run females, cause they seem to listen and handle better, but the heat cycles make the males have a notch up on the females. I think males (depends on the dog) last longer in the field.
Re: males or females
I,ll take a female hands down if I have a choice, not that I won't own a male. But the males have their problems too, running around for at least two or three minutes sniffing and scratching ,peeing on every thing they can find and just acting like teenage boys in general, not all of them but the majority I have owned. Now that being said if you find a hard hunting ,good handling male that is all business, you have something worth keeping.I really haven't seen that many in my limited experience.Denny

Re: males or females
I love females! They handle better and i think they are better jump dogs in my opinion, and when ever you're ready to add an addition to the kennel what better to have than your own female to breed to your choice of males!

Re: males or females
I have 4 males at this time, no females I prefer males mouths over females. The best to dogs I ever owned where females but they always come into heat at the wrong time seems like. This is probably not a real good indicator but look at the world hunt winners probably more males than females. I will own a good one of either sex.
Re: males or females
The best Rabbit Hounds I've seen are female,I'll allways have a male but when I want to fill the pot the females are in the box.

Re: males or females
When hunting with my friends who have males it seems like my 2 females go directly to work while the males are running around sniffing butts
and peeing on everything for the first 10 minutes. Then they hunt pretty evenly.

Re: males or females
I have been told in the past by three individuals who are pretty big names in the trialing end of beagling, are also licensed A.K.C. judges and all three of them have made multiple field champions. And I quote "I wouldn't own a 15" male!"and"I don't care what they've won,I can stand a big male!" and "You ever see a 15" class of big males that could REALLY run a smooth line and actually keep the rabbit going?"If any of these three guys are going to keep a male it's going to be a little one.
