BELLS just curious!! While judging a cast a few weeks ago there was one dog in the cast that had on a bell and at times they would get in the cover so thick you couldn't see what they were doing. Can you guess which dog I was going with in those situation. there was usaully acouple of the other dogs right along with it but I was starting to depend on that bell to help me keep track of where they were and have been considering putting them on acouple of my gun dogs. are there in downfalls such as hearing loss or anything?

I always use bells.

I think they are great.

Espeacially if you gun hunting in thick cover and a dog gets seperated from the pack..

Farmers Co-Op carries several sizes. Also, tractor supply has them sometimes.

use them all the time on both beagles and bird dogs. never had dogs hang up in the brush. bells break off first as most are just pop riveted to a nylon loop. only problem i've encountered is they fill up with snow and freeze during winter but then the cover isn't as thick either for spotting the dogs. most all dog supply catalogs carry bells.

I'd go through a bell a week when I used the ones with nylon straps, then I went and bought 5 of the small Swiss bells and still got all 5 a year later. It annoys the heck out of some guys, but I've got to were I like it and I can always tell where my dogs are when things get quiet.

I don't put them one when I am with guys that might not like em, but I enjoy hearing the bells and knowing exactly where the dogs are at work. Plus, it seems to keep them together better. I don't really like dogs wondering off and it helps me keep them closer also. I just love bells. I've noticed no hearing loses, except when they don't want to hear me.

PS, dogs ain't dumb - mine seem to handle better with bells on. They know I know exactly where they are. ding ding - ding-a-ling.

One downside, sometimes when the bells are ringing and a dog strikes a rabbit a ways off the other dogs won't hear them as clearly, but that is not too often and they eventually hear them.

Try gettting your bells from a craft and hobby shop. There alot cheaper than any of the hunting dog supply houses. I get mine for 1.99 for 3 in a package.

I found the link for those Swiss bells -- they last 10 times longer than any I was tried before. I think they are the 3rd ones down on the list:

Hey Bill -- nope I have not been after them yet -- I had that deer bug from the end of October when a big rutting buck went runnning a doe through my backyard -- But that is over now. Now I'm sittin at home wishing deer season was over. I am dieiing to go -- but with a man in orange in every other tree I don't dare.

Bill, how old are those pups, did you get rid of all of them?

Those swiss bells attach directly to the coller the loop is metal. They were super tight on my E-Collars, but not too tight on the regular collars.

I still have a Bruner female left also i sold the male...i may have sold the wrong one he was doing pretty good i just didnt like his mouth. I got out this morning for awhile just to run some i didnt take a gun. IM also afraid of the deer hunters.
