If you want to know you are going to run a rabbit no matter the conditions get a dog with huge nose and tolerate a little extra mouth. Most people say the thing they hate the most is extra mouth but I just think it comes with the huge nose dogs and it you want to run consistently you have it.

It was minus 7 in town when we left so we did not want to know what the temp was out of town.

Very nice hound work. You can see that two of those dogs were superior hounds. Not acustomed to see hounds run in single file line like that. Not sure if thats good or bad, but they definately accepted their position in the pack. Do they line up like that on sod as well. I have heard guys talking about this but never seen such a definitive showcase of it.

This is a brace of a couple that were derbies during this run. Lots of guys on here think the dogs are way to slow and like a faster dog. This works for us.

I enjoy watching your dogs, Mark. You get some really good footage of them. Regardless of their speed, it's obvious that they run with desire. There's not a darn thing wrong with a medium speed dog.

Keep them videos coming!!! Just like Bev said nothing wrong with a medium speed hound. I have some faster hounds that I'm very happy with in my kennel but it doesn't mean there better.I've taken a little break from trialing this past year but have gotten some good hunting in though and a new appreciation for the good old fashoin grub it out if you have to big nose gun dog that locks on and brings it back with no help.It seems a lot of people like that fast flashy hound at the trials in a pack, but can they run a rabbit by themselves in tough scent conditions under the gun, that's what matters in my book!!!!!!!

Like I said earlier I hear people talk about having the big big nose dogs that have the honest mouth but I have never seen it. We always said we would never tolerate it but just got tired of to many days of making excuses why the dogs could not run and why we lost so many rabbits. I run 5 days a week and when I go I want to be able to run rabbits so we have decided that we could take a little extra mouth in the process. Just a preference for me not saying I am right or wrong. If we lived in the south with not frost and warm weather it would be no problem

I have heard of a dog barking every breath, but they were barking 3 times every breath. I seen a few barks out of place but for the most part they were all over the line. I like a big big nose and your correct, its nearly impossible to get one that doesnt give an extra bark. I go to the woods to hear dogs give tongue on track.
The flip side to this is have long periods with no barking and lacking the nose to keep the race going. I like speed, but most of the fast dogs will go 20 yards off the end giving extra barks. Not so sure that is any better.
Mark, keep breeding and feeding what you like. Im certain you have no trouble getting a rabbit to the gun when you want one. Wish I could say the same for some of the field trial dogs I have seen.
I have to go get a cough drop after hearing those dogs bark.

aint nothin wrong with them hounds.if you are a gunner you can kill more bunnys over a good nosed slow dog than you can most fast hounds. rabbits dont run as big if they aint being pushed fast.just my opinion

Problem I have is when you run lots of hare, there are days when dogs can lift their head up and fly through the woods 20mph without checks and thats awsome. If you have medium speed dogs and another guys dogs leave mine in the dust on those good running days Im disgusted. On the contrary, when running is tough and the medium speed, big nosed dogs are pushing a track and the fast dogs are making a mess of things it can be disgusting.
We all wish to have a big nosed dog with gears to slow down to match conditions but for the most part thats a bunch of crap. Fast dogs are never going to walk a track at a 3-4 speed when running is tough, and the medium speed dog is never going to lift his head up and run an 8 speed when scenting is good. In my experience the real good ones can move 2 gears in either direction. Most dogs only have about 1 gear in either direction, and some only have 1 speed. When dogs are solo or braced, you have a better chance of seeing their gears in my experience.
As a whole, the medium speed hound gives you the best running day in and day out. Ive never seen a dog with a great nose that ran faster than a 7 speed, but Im optomistic to see one someday and I dont care whose dog it is. I work toward hounds with 7 speed and big nose, but thats a life project. I have often wondered if I wouldnt be happier going with a 6 speed and big nose. I know for a fact their easier to come by. From what I have seen, these would be PP dogs, depending on the judges. SPO seems to be more 4-5 speed and Midwest/LP more 8+ speed. Anyone care to elaborate on what they have experienced.

I have seen it and seen it on several occasions. I have also seen where the rabbits couldn't be run on certain days by other dogs that were nice hounds on most days. Enjoyed your video.

I agree with you Mark I dont mind a little extra mouth while on track if rabbit is produced to run. It is the dog that is popping off all day long just because he got a little scent of a rabbit and doesnt produce a runable track is what I cant stand
You know the type the other dogs after a while wont even go check the dog popping off BUT I love a dog that can move a track up a gravel road walking it out when the other dogs are just running around and cant smell nothing but rock Now that will put a smile on your face
