Abandoned beagle story

Post by PBJ »

A few weeks ago, when it was pretty cold around here, I stopped at the gas station across from the school where I work. I noticed a female beagle sitting at the door. I asked about the dog when I went inside and they said it has been hangin around for about a week and no one could catch it. I tried to call it but it wouldn't get close. I went on to work. The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. I asked our principal if it would be okay to go try to catch the dog. He told me to go. I tried for about an hour without success. When I came back to work, freezing my tail off, the principal called me and asked where the dog was. I told him I couldn't catch it. He told me to get back out there and try again. I tried a few times that day and couldn't gain the trust of that hound.
The next morning, the principal called my room and said that the dog was still out there and to go get it and don't come back without it. I went home and got one of my hounds thinking it might come to another dog. This somewhat backfired as the abandoned dog was scared of my dog, but it played a part in the catching of the dog. The abandoned dog was so scared of my dog it ran inside the gas station where someone easily grabbed her.
I had already arranged for the local shelter to take her so I took her there. She really was a sweet little dog once she was caught. I think she was just so scared because everyone was trying to catch her. Anyways, I kept in contact with the shelter and it turns out she needs some attention from the vet. Her vet bill is going to be around $215. The cool thing is that the school is raising money through donations to pay her bill to make sure she gets the care she needs. Our principal told me to call the shelter and tell them to start the treatment and if we couldn't raise the money, he would cover the rest himself. Pretty cool on his part.
A lot of trouble for one little beagle, I know, but I do love these little hounds and obviously a lot of other people do too. Thanks for reading my story, I just thought I would share something positive going on in our community.

I love beagles too.

I sure hate the way these shelters and Vets work together. I doubt the dog had much if anything wrong with it. Everything is a big mess when these types of people get involved. It must be spayed and all that to where a dog then pretty much has a death sentence. This dog is lucky, most would be euthanized because people wont pay to spay a bitch they dont know if it will even run.

Cool story PBJ, and tell the principle it's nice to see there are bosses out there that still have a heart and that sometimes work can be interrupted for something a little more important even if it's just a small thing.

Sure hope the little girl finds a nice home. Maybe with a little handling she could become a therapy dog for the school and the school mascot??? We have a golden retriever named Liberty at our elementary school. And a Lab at our MIddle school. These dogs have an effect on the even the most troubled kids.

Good story..........nice to hear of a boss understanding. As far as shelters here is my understanding (could be wrong)....there are kill shelters and non-kill shelters. When either of them take in a dog they give it the necessary treatment providing that the kill shelter thinks the animal stands a good chance of adoption. There are rescue groups that specialize in each breed of dogs. These shelters usually have a contact and if they believe a dog has a strong chance of being rehabilitated they contact the rescue and if they have room in a foster home they save it from being euthanized. I would highly suggest anyone looking for a dog to look into adoption. The only draw back is sometimes rescue groups are too picky. We got a female lab from a rescue and she was the best dog I have ever owned. After losing her recently I began my search for another. Sunday I had a lady bring a lab in for an in home visit. The dog was too hyper for my liking. I live on a state road and the lady asked me "what if your 9 y/o son opened the front door and the dog ran out?" I told her that my son was very good with our last dog and that further more I don't want a dog that bolts out an open door. Our last dog sat at the door when we were ready to go out and wouldn't budge until I gave her the command. She did the same thing when we came back in. Sat there until we wiped her paws and until I said go. Anyway she declined my application because she didn't like me living on a busy road. Now how petty is that ?? They want homes for these dogs but turn around and act like that. I understand their concerns but I had already told her that the dog's hyperness wasn't a fit for us. Anyway shelters and rescues do good work and wouldn't be needed if there were more responsible breeders. JMO

I took this dog to P.A.W.S in Petersburg. It is a no kill shelter. It is completely ran off of donations. A man left the money in his will for this place to be built. The dogs live at this shelter until they are adopted. The dogs have decent size kennels and a large fenced area to roam outside. I don't know or care if the dog runs, its alive with a shot at a decent life.

What does this hound look like? Did they put an add in the paper?
There are guys that sit at that station as a meeting point to go hunting. I know Rex Simmons and Billy Bredemier do, I seen Butch Rodgers & Morris Beck there also. It stands to reason that a hound lost on the mines north of there would return to where the truck was parked.
Put a found add with picture on the store window and I bet the owner gets his hound back... ;)

Great story, thanks for sharing.
If I was the owner I would be the one putting up the lost hound add all over he place.
I think PBJ did his part in the good samaritan.
If he wants to put the found hound adds great but don't lose sleep over it, you did a great thing by catching this hound.

S.R. Patch, This dog had been hangin out at the store for several days. I would think if the owner was looking for this dog, considering there isn't any other business or gas station there, he/she would have stopped there and asked. There was at least 10 people trying to catch this hound, none of whom were the owner, It also had no collar. If you know all of these guys that meet there, ask them if they lost a female. I hope, if it turns out to be one that they lost, and not one that was dumped, they can get her back. I wasn't going to bring the dog home and put it with my six dogs for fear of it having something and me losing all of my dogs. The vet bill is, as of right now, $215. This is for shots and heartworm treatment. It also may have a skin condition or allergies that could cost more. It was freezing outside, and my options were limited. This dog needed to get some sort of shelter. Not really looking for criticism, I was just wanting to share a nice story, that hopefully will have a nice outcome. Thanks again for reading.

I wasnt saying what you did was wrong. Im saying $215 for $10 worth of Vet treatment is outragous. I havent dealt with a PAWS shelter, just going off the county animal shelters and there rules here in Virginia. The Vet that shelter is using is making a killing where he or she should be trying to help.

Wasn't trying to be critical, you did a good thing getting the hound away from the road. What i meant was, who ever lost the hound may not have been around the area of the store when they lost it and may be looking over in the mine area, not thinking the hound would come back to the store(I don't know, just thinking).
I was over running the mines and found one of my hounds at the bottom of 1/2 mile hill and the other at Algers, not that far as the crow flys but sure had me running in circles.
Sorry for try'n to help.
Also, I'd say with the vet bill running up, PAWS just bought themselves a hound...

Good story nice you helped. I can think of a couple problems one..people will drop a dog that runs deer or they get mad at for some reason the other is it bothers me as to what they ask for a shelter dog. However i guess its easy for someone like myself to be critical. The dropping of a beagle gives us all a bad name..Back in the 50 60 you could get a 25 dollar beagle at the pound some turned out real good.
