Our season ended in Colorado today. We finished the last two weeks with pretty poor scenting conditions. The air has been really dry and doesn't hold the scent down and we haven't had any snow on the ground to puch the cover down. When the dog has got on good tracks, the cover has been too tall to see the rabbit to get a shot.

It was the last day we can kill rabbits today in nc (rained all day) . Jumped 8 and killed 7 but that is not the end. Now I have till next season to get my young dogs right. To me that is just as fun.

I had my last gun hunt yesterday to end the season. I hunted by myself and four dogs on my buddys farm. They hammered run to catch style with few breakdowns and circlced rabbits over and over all day long. It was a blast and scenting was spectacular. I shot the last rabbit of the day so the 6 month old pup could get a taste of it.
I really hate to see gun season end and I had some awesome hunting this year. Got to meet new houndsmen and ran quite a bit on new ground. To those who talked about getting together and hunting with me this year but couldn't make it, we'll try again next year or maybe do some off season running.
Can't wait until next year already.

We tried to go yesterday but it rain all day pretty heavy so we stayed in.It's a bad way to end the season but we got plenty of pups and season hounds to work with until next season, plus we plan on trialing a lot more this year. So just because season closed don't mean we still can't run like normally.
Ed if your ever down this way you know the invite is always open for running and tail gate stories.

Same here GREAT DAY . We did not get the weather yet but you could "Feel" it coming. Had two quik 2 hole chases and then a " Two hour Marathon" that was just about mistake free. I did not want to kill today, the long race I could have "Hit it with a rock " twice and "Kissed it on the Nose " once.
Pups are only 20 months old If they continue to get better I believe I will have a "Pair of Rabbit Dogs" I won't call them "JUST BEAGLES"
Thanx,
Jim :check:

Yesterday was a blast. We started late due to the inclement weather and I had to work a little in the morning. The rain let up about 12:30 so we went to the field. The rabbits were waiting for us to get out of the truck. For two hours we pounded three rabbits and bagged two. About one hour into the hunt the bottom fell out of the sky a we got soaked. All four of the dogs were disappointed that we had to leave but my friend and I were wet and had enough. Both of the 9month old pups I had out did a great job. It is now time to put quality training time on them so they will really smoke next year. Hope everyone had a great season.

Our small game season ended yesterday.I woke up about 4:30 A.M. and lay in bed listening to the rain pound down thinking"oh man,not on the last day to hunt!"I met my buddy Jeremy and we headed to the hunting spot and turned them loose around 7:30 and it was still coming down hard but it didn't seem to bother the rabbits any as we had super running and the 5 dogs performed well.Jeremy thought his shotgun was under the truck seat and found out once we got to the hunting spot[35 miles from home] that his wife had taken it out a couple of days before.Bummer! I wish I had some help as I missed several of the rabbits I shot at and was out of position on several others.Oh well... We got good and soaked and cold and Jeremy had stuff to do so he left about noon.
I ate lunch and then met up with another hunting buddy who had to work that morning but wanted to run that afternoon.Pete and his friend Steve and I went out to a farm that I have permission to hunt on but I hadn't been there for about a year. We ran several and Pete's three and my two did a nice job on them with me again blowing what should have been an easy shot but then I didn't feel too bad as Pete missed him twice.LOL
The one thing that bothered me was our last chase of the day.It was about 4:30P.M. and I'd been at it all day in the weather and was played out.Time to head for the truck. My Rainy female and Pete's male Clyde [both young dogs] opened up and started to go.Our other three harked to them and they seemed to pick at it for a couple of minutes with Pete yelling that he'd seen a rabbit. The dogs after a little bit fired on out and were driving hard and no checks.I listened for a minute and it was sounding"too good" to me.I ran to a big open field and they were driving hard just inside the tree line and then started veering up a steep hill with big woods on it with no indication that the rabbit was coming back.I just had a "feeling" that this wasn't right and yelled at the top of my lungs "hey, what are you doing.NO! Get in here!"Immediately my older bitch Sierra came out of the race and headed right to me looking kind of sheepish.I believed that Sirra was a broke dog as she had given me no problem on anything that wasn't a rabbit and had come back to me when others had run trash.I then shocked my young dog and yelled back to Pete that his dogs sounded like they were leaving the country. He shocked his two young dogs and they stopped but his older female kept driving hard but was swinging back towards us.We had all the other dogs stopped and then Pete saw the rabbit she was running. And I'm thinking what the HEY???????????????I've been doing this houndog thing a long time and I was sure they were wrong.But.............If I was right I'm glad we stopped them as it was getting towards dark and it looked like they were about to top out on a real big ridge. If I was wrong then I hope those hounds have short memories.LOL
I guess you could say that we finished our season out right under the conditions.

Hey Dana -

I wouldn't second guess yourself for a second on calling that track a trash run.....I'd rather err on the safe side, especially right at dark with 3 young dogs on the ground and the circumstances as they unfolded. As I reflect on the situation I've come up w/ two possible explanations. I know I saw the rabbit twice going and coming back, but I agree it didn't "sound right."

1 - When the dogs took the rabbit out and had the long check at the top of the field Steve walk right in on them and pushed the rabbit further away from the jump area rather than the rabbit looping back towards us as would be expected.

2 - During that long check the young dogs got on an "off track" and my Maggie dog left out on the rabbit going roughly the same direction. Steve told me he did see some of the dogs higher up on that hill when they were leaving out.

Who knows, but I honored your trash call as you were in a better position to make the call and I respect your experience in the field. But, I was also glad to see that rabbit coming back w/ Maggie in tow. LOL

Take care,

-Pete

My fare weather hunting buddies laid in the bed on the last day, but i just couldn't. We had a steady slow rain all day long with temps starting out in the mid 40's and got colder as the day went on. I took 6 dogs out - 4 (any where from 18-24 months old) and 2 (around 8-9 months old). Dropped the tailgate and it maybe took 10 minutes and it was on :!: 1st rabbit made a huge circle and came back by me at about a mach 7 speed with the dogs about 15-20 seconds behind. I think i knocked that little white ball of fur off of his tail end, and he ended up in a hole. Jumped 3 more, with 1 kill. All races lasted from 45 minutes to 2 hrs. and the dogs did a great job. I personally could not be prouder of my potlickers. To see how they have progressed in their first season really makes me   :camo: They have came a long way in the past year. Now it is time to buckle down and start some serious soloing. The time is getting ready to change and we will have some extra daylight hours to work on some pups. Can't wait till next season to roll around.............. it'll be here before u know it.
Hope everyone had a good season, take care, and god bless
............to be continued..........
