Sure a pretty pair of beagles.

What type of scenting was it on that day? What was the wetness, dew point?
Air, (scent) laying down, or rising?

I would say about a 5-6 speed in the short cllip we had to judge by.

Bet they would run much faster after a BIG, WET, one here in the swamps though.

We all know that all good dogs speed changes with conditions.

What was all that shooting about? Is that how YOU call the dogs?????????

Not knowing the conditions and from only seeing that little bit I would venture to say medium speed, maybe a tick towards high medium. (4.5 to 5.5) on my scale. Somwhere between SPO and progressive pack. Rabbit killing speed. Just my opinion of course.

That was the second rabbit that I shot at with my new Charles Daly shotgun. I got the first rabbit, but I missed that one. My cousin was the second shot and he missed too.

Based on what I saw - I'd call that flat med....a 5. Do your dogs have gears? We always hear criticism that fast dogs don't gear down when they need to. But, I think just as important, can med speed dogs gear up when conditions allow and really explode on a track and drive the rabbit hard? In my opinion gears are much more important than just track speed.

I don't want fast dogs that can't circle a rabbit on poor days b/c they can't gear down and move a tough line. And I don't want slow or even med dogs that can't hammer a rabbit when scenting is ideal. I had a couple med slow speed dogs when I first got into beages that couldn't do anything but line up like a choo choo and trot the line. When they jumped a rabbit you still had time to walk back to the truck, eat a biscuit, drink a cup of coffee and still get back in time to shoot the rabbit on the first circle....and hopefully it wasn't a cold morning, cause you'd go numb waiting for the action. LOL!

Very nice looking dogs.

They gear down easy enough when conditions demand it. They can gear it up a couple of notches, but that's the speed they like to run.

bucks better beagles

Definitely rabbit killing speed and quality but I would rate them slow to medium on speed. Of course, you would have to put down a burner with them to see how they would react.

Briar hoppers. Good post. I'm still laughing! Seen the swamp rabbit look back at those slow dogs and pass them swimming back to the same side they were swimming from.

Most dogs pick up speed a notch or two when they smell blood. Surely after those two shots, there was that smell of blood for them to follow.

(I'm trying to give Shotgun John a hard time like we here do each other. Maybe that new gun has a crooked barrel!!!
Both must be females as a male would of come over and pissed on their legs before continuing the race!!!)
Is making fun of each others dogs and kidding each other while hunting just an Alabama Thing???

I think the only way anyone could give a good estimate is to know whether or not the dogs were having a hard time with these rabbits?

If they were running at their average top end speed on a good rabbit then someone could give you a good estimate in their opinion or compared to the dogs they run.

If they were having to work to run these rabbits because the scenting was not very good and they were running slower than their normal top end pace, then they would be another speed and if this is the case they cannot be judged based on these videos. IMO

Although someone could tell you the speed they were running in these videos is what they would consider a certain speed compared to the dogs they run and just assume that they were running at their top speed.

and if this was their top speed then I would call it no more than a 5
