I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd

Post by Joeyman »

I'm trying to help a friend out with his beagle.

I started the dog for him. He has a male beagle it is now 7months old. His Dog started in the wild on wild rabbits at 5 months. We didn't use a training rabbit.

So he's been running for a couple months. So now I'm starting to introduce his dog to my dogs.

This past weekend I took out Lisa. This is how I did it.

I kept lisa on the leash. We turned Odie loose. Let him start his own rabbit.

Didn't take long he started on his own rabbit. Once he got going good I turned lisa loose. She joined. They stayed together for maybe a minute then he falls behind. She isn't very fast. Maybe a 5 speed solo. She picks up the pace with other dogs. We did this over and over for 2 days straight. No progress.

What do you guys think of my method of trying to get him to join Lisa. Or I'm I expecting to much.

And I'm not really sure on the breeding of his dog. Seems to be a slower dog. Alot of barks but not running. More of a walk. He is 7 months old. Shouldn't he be alteast running some on a trail at 7 months old?

If he's running his own rabbits, that's great! He may just need some time to adjust to other dogs. I have one that is shy around strange dogs for quite a while, but once the rabbit is up and running, he just won't quit! Just give hime time, that's all.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking.

But I don't know.

I would think at 7months he should be running more than he is. He kind of walks the line may go into a slow trott but then walk sort of a faster walk and tail waggin good.

I'll have to video and show you guys whats going on.

Man those dogs in the second video are slowwww. They probably bore the rabbit to death. To each his own,but that was painful. That lead dog was probably a 2 (on the richter scale). He must be feeding him milkshakes.

I try to keep my opinions on speed to myself. However, that second video has refined SLOW for me. Now, I understand why which hound is put down FIRST in traditional brace is such a big deal! If that is "slotting up", I prefer the pack that runs 6 wide! Oh well, as said previously, to each his own!

Actually. neither of the two dogs would do very well as both left the line to move on ahead without opening all (emphasis on all) the way. The front one went at least 5-6 feet ahead to regain the line, or wasn't opening. They both moved their heads and bodies too far to the left and right without opening too.

I like it even more when rhe "fastest" one starts in the rear and while the front dog is staying on the line straddling it, the one behind goes under the front dog also staying right on the line and lifts the front dog off its feet while going under it to get the lead. That's staying on the line and running all of it!!!
Remember though, most of the old time AKC field champions, ( marked in red) in our dogs pedigrees became champions by winning in this type of trial. That's what's in most of your AKC dogs lineage and blood.

ARHA changed all that!!!! Practically overnight too!!!

That video was what an AKC Beagle Trial was like. Picture many more dogs on leashes held by their handlers behind these dogs waiting their turn to be put on a rabbit one of the human galley jumped for each cast of two. Been to many of them.

The pup looks bored. Must have too much faster running blood in it for this type "RUNNING".

No hunt was bred in them. Looking for a line was what they are bred for.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES< SHOTGUN!!!

Update 6/3/2009

took odie out with the pack last night after work.

First we ran him with all my dogs. That didn't work out to well. So we dropped them off and went to another spot of mine that is just infested with rabbits and ran Odie with lisa.

LIttle progress. Better but not what I'd like to see. He tends to run his own rabbit and not work together with lisa. They may be running the same rabbit but he seems to be real independent.

Take a look. and if you could please tell us what speed you think he is?

Here is Odie. That dog box worked out quiet well. Nice and big. You can fit 4 beagles in there.
