Saw where the young lady lost her dog to the dreaded heartworms. So sorry for your loss.

But there is something that might be of interest to others using Ivermec. Our Vet told us a couple years back that he was seeing active worms (wigglers) in dogs treated regularly with Heartguard and ect and Ivermec. He said as is the case with alot of other drugs, Heartworms are getting resistant to Ivermec. Not saying it should not be used. No indeed. The vet told us to disreguard the common 1/10cc for every 10 pounds. Ivermec still is effective on heartworms if given in a dose that is effective. We live in Arkansas with skeeters that are so thick it is not funny, they ever stir in the winter months on a mild day. We decided to give 5/10 cc to our hounds that are 20-30 pounds and 4/10 cc to a couple small houds we have. We have done this for over two years. No side effects and no heartworms. Not telling anyone to do this, only saying this is what our Vet told us and it has worked for us in a heavy skeeter population area. Just passing on information. Use your own judgement.

If you give one click of the Equimax you would be doing as you say.

I just wormed mine yesterday to have them ready for the october hunting season. They vary in size but still gave each one click.

I break a piece of bread in 4 pieces, smear the Equimax on each piece and then fold it over and mash together. Throw one to each dog and its gone.

I don't know enough about Equimax to say anything. We use Ivermectin Injectible and use Insulin Needles to draw up our dose. I can only say it is taking a little more Ivermectin to keep Heartworms at bay these days. As long as your hounds are testing negative with "one click" it must be working.

thats what i use is the equimax,

I'm still hangin' in there with Interceptor. Safe even for pregnant bitches, and it also gets all worms except tapes. I don't even treat for tapes unless I see them. Interceptor will cost about $4.25/per month, per dog, but it's well worth it because you need do nothing else.

"Interceptor" is the brand name? What exactly is in it and who makes it?

Interceptor is the brand name. It's not ivermectin-based. The active ingredient is milbemycin. Novartis makes Interceptor; they are a huge pharmaceutical company for both human and animal health. For example, they make Diovan, my BP medicine.

The Equimax also has praziquantel 14.03% in addition to the ivermectin1.87% so it also gets any tapes just in case your dogs have them. Its a cheap wormer compared to many others.

Hey padcabky, I also use it for horses! Roping horses that is!!!

Bev, is that the only thing you use then? What do you use for tapes?


John, the equimax gets heart and tapes but nothing else? If so what do you use for everything else?


I'll do anything that works as good or better even if it costs a couple extra dollars.......especially if it simplifies the whole process.

It gets them all and its all I use.

I just mentioned the tapes and heart worms as those usually take a different medication to be given in most dogs worming schedule.

You can buy the equimax a little cheaper without the tape worm medication, but since it is so cheap anyway, I just use the one that gets tapes too and give it every time even though they don't have tapes. Wasteful I guess.

i have used it for over a year now, no problems . its about 13 bucks , dont have any horses yet but i would use it on them

OK, just so I'm clear on this because I may switch to doing it this way. You guys use the Equimax in the tube that looks like a big syringe? You go 1 click per dog now matter what size? And you give them this dose once per month, not 3 days in a row or anything like that? How do you go about using it with pups? And what if any are the negatives to using this?

Once a month during the summer and no wormer at all during cold weather months.

Use nemex for pups.

As a side note, the worm dosage of Ivernec also helps with fleas and other biting, blood suckers.

Heck, I sound like a salesman. Wonder if they will send me some money or free samples?

Has anyone used Evolution by Phizer. Thats what my vet suggested for my new pup. Its supposed to be good for heart worm, fleas, ticks, and 2 other kinds of worms (ring and hook I believe she said.)
