11-30-2009 update

Not good news guys. Over the break I had him walking in the yard and runing a bit. I even took him around the block on the leash thanksgiving morning. Friday he stayed home he even managed to get out of the kennel while I was loading the other dogs for our morning hunt. He ran all the way to the tailgate of my truck and sat waiting for me to load him. I felt bad I picked him up told him not yet but you'll get to go again. I put him up. I fed him when we got back from hunting. he ate good I made him chiken boiled and deboned.

Saturday when I got back from hunting I found him in the dog box very weak and bad looking again. He still ate the chicken out of my hand I saw him take a drink out of the water bucket too. Sunday he looked even worse. Not walking any more. I had to hand feed him again and shoot water in his mouth with a syringe.

I think he has brain damage. I tried my best to help him get thru this and he was improving but now we are back to square one. He may have had something wrong with his brain the whole time their is no telling. I've been going back and forth on what could of happened. I could take him to a specialist to have a catscan deal but that will cost me over a grand and they can't tell me if he will pull thru or not or they may sugest brain sergury and who will know what the outcome will be. I'm going to keep trying. He just looks like a stroke victim.

I know it's people to dogs, but I've got a bit of a medical background and it sure sounded like stroke to me. I hope you keep us updated, and wishing you the best with him.

Dern it man... I hate to hear this.
My Chase hound colapsed a few weeks back after about 3 hours of running, I was devistated at that moment.
thought I had lost him for sure. Fortunately he has recovered and the vet gave a clean bill of health.
But I somewhat know the pain you are going thru...

Hang in there , the entire community is pulling for him!!!

Joey,
Just now learned of pistol and the possible tick borne illness he has. I had this crap year before last. I was sick for a year and am still not back to 100%. If you are giving him Doxycycline or Tetracycline, don't have him out in the sun at all. Believe me the treatment is near bad as the illness. I really doubt brain illness or he would be having siesures. I learned from my doc that most people do well on a week of Doxycycline, I didn't. It took 30 days, 2 a day to get rid of the tick borne infection. As you know, keep him warm, but out of the sun. Feed him what ever he will eat (chicken & rice is real good). Watch him closly for dehydration. Keep fluids in front of him. Mix water with pedolyte to keep a proper balance of him eltrolytes. If he eats and drinks freely, don't give up on him by any means. He may need IV fluid if he starts to dehydrate. It just takes time to get over this type illness, man or beast. Will be thinking of you and Pistol. Hang in there man.

PS you might check around for a University that has a Vet program. Sometimes they can help if you contact the program chairperson.

I believe that in my correspondence with Joeyman he stated the dog has had some seizures and convulsions. This is when I told him it could possibly have been a stroke. When he said that on the one day the dog was up walking and appearing much better and then worse the next just made me believe more towards a neurological disorder such as a stroke. I'm no Veterinarian but have seen many animals with neurological disorders being brought into slaughter and they appear to not be firing on all cylinders. I don't know that this is the problem but wonder if possibly the tick disease may have caused some central nervous system damage or possibly a small blood clot reaching the brain. I'd say a catscan would tell the story but they aren't cheap.
