Guys, I have a 13 month old female that I bout off a guy, she is kinda late getting started, fooled very little with when she was 5 months of age, cause I had the dog then and sold her to my buddy.
Anyway, this dog can tear a puppy pen up, and in the wild she stirs good; even today she jumped a rabbit but after it got out of sight she stoped fooling with it and I had to walk her and put her and the other dogs on the track. Here is the problem she will not go with the other dogs when they are running a rabbit. She will go out and hunt with them, but when they jump one she just stands there.

What do I need to do???

This dog has good blood in her ( Grandpa is KY Reggie), she just wasnt started at the rite age do to the time of year it was, due to the fact of copperheads and rattle snakes in my good running areas...

And and all advice is welcome; thanks in advance,

Josh Jones

sounds like it just aint clicked for her yet .. if shes wearing a pupy pen out /is she sight chaseing all the time or useing her nose? if shes useing nose then she probably be ok.
what i wont do with a dog liken that is let it do anything if it wont run with the dogs it aint gonna wonder around doing its own thing , i put it on a lead if it dont act like it want to go to them it stays on lead ..usually them go to the bone yard but she may just need time ..

Have one that did the same, was to the point thinking he'd never go. then one day off he went. I handled it by bracing him with his mother or the old male. I think it started to click when the other dog honored him. He packs nice now

Thanks guys, she uses her nose real good, just late starter. She acts like a 7-8 month old dog does started when they should be. This dog has been worked withh a little ust not like she should have been. But now she is getting the time she deserves. She has jumped 2 rabbits in the wild; didnt really know what to do with them, just barked a couple times when she jumped them, then started tracking it, not really chasing after it. But I think she will catch on and if she does she is going to make a good jump dog. She uses her nose real good and will get in the thick stuff..

Thanks,
Josh Jones

WIth the lack of exposure as you said she is like a younger hound mentally. I would keep taking her and maybe just put her down with a hound or two
at most. She will probably put it all together in a few trips. Have you shot one with her there and let her pull some fur? I know that has gotten more than
one of mine to kick it in gear. It is just like a light switch for some. It all comes at once. I have had good luck with those kind. Seems like they take it all
in and progress real quick once they go. Good luck with her!

Took the dogs out today, the 15 month old out with them. She hunted with the pack better; especially after I killed one, but still showed no intrest in going with them when they hit a rabbit and took off.

Try kenneling the pup with another dog and just run those two together for a few times and if she starts packing with that one then gradually keep adding dogs to the pack. I know it's a headache but this seems to work. Good luck

well i think sometimes it's easy to cull if ya got the money to buy better hounds with no bad traits(yeah right), but this is JMO a poor man has poor ways so sometimes a hound is as good as the time you put into it.
Once you fix the problems remember these bad traits that gave you problems when you breed them and breed to remove these bad traits, don't keep out crossing stay as close to the line as possible with the better traits to remove the bad ones.
Now sometimes out crossing isn't a bad thing but if your not careful you will bring in worse or more bad habits that you already have, and before you know ya gotta pen full of slugs.
But if your like most these days and don't have the spare cash, put a lot of time into your hound and then hope you can pull it out of it's problems. Then if all else fells then cull.
Shoot i wished everyone i ever had hit the ground running from birth with no problems which would make it easier for me, but i can't seem to get any that is that good yet.Maybe someday.

IMO, a dog that is thirteen months old, that is tearing up a puppy pen, and either doesn't have the desire or the nose to run a rabbit is just a time and money waster. Maybe hanging on and hoping, then line breeding those same traits is the problem.

She uses her nose good, and can track the rabbit once it is up, she just isnt taking off with the pack running. She hunts good, stirs good, and knows what a rabbit is. Hwr only fault is she will not pack at this moment.

But you have to take into consideration that she was started at a late age, everybody that has seen her work tells me to just keep taking her and she will eventually start packing, with more time out with the other dogs.

Time This dog has the tools now it just needs the time to put it all together. Have one now that started the same as yours. It was frustrating but when he put it all together man what a feeling. As they build confidence in thier abilities the light will come on.
