Killer Hawks

Post by Big Dog »

It was real cold on saturday and windy so I decided to take out two of my more patient dogs that had big noses along with two pups that are green started. They were able to jump rabbits and keep them going farely well although it wasn't always pretty. On one good run I saw two big hawks circling over the dogs, and all of sudden one went into a nose dive. As soon as he hit the ground I knew the deal, I heard the rabbit screaming. I didn't bother to run down there as I knew the dogs were coming. when the dogs got about 20 yards away the hawk flew up, and I walked down to where I saw the hawk dive. There were my two pups playing tug o war with mr cottontail. Those hawks flew over the dogs the rest of the afternoon, but didn't manage to catch any more rabbits, but it was definitely a sight to see.

Hey Big Dog I have a place I run up near West Chester and the hawks act like you discribe with a total disrespect. The dogs will be running and hear come the hawks. I don't trust them, they would probably dive on a pup in an instant. I noticed that the rabbits stick to the woods, and hesitate to cross the open fields where the hawks are circling!

How do you explain to a dog when it looses the scent cause we all know that there are days when we yelling at the dogs saying I KNOW IT DIDNT VANISH OR DISAPPEAR YOU BETTER FIND IT!!!!!! i know personally i have done that and have seen the rabbit cross and they cant smell it or act like i am lieing!!!! so what do we tell a dog when they running it and then a hawk swoops down and lifts off with it and carries mr. cottontail away??????

No need to worry about the dogs. The hawks have figured out that the dogs will flush the rabbit which makes for easy hunting for them. What ya'll have discovered is the Art of Falconery except the bird is not bringing you back the prey. Google it and check it out it is pretty neat.
