Montana Help...

Post by CJF »

Hello:

I have recently joined the board, and would be interested in hearing from anyone chasing rabbits in Montana. I have been an avid bird hunter all of my life, and dearly love to swing a set of shotgun barrells. After a little looking around it seems like rabbit hunting might be a great way to extend my hunting season.

I have a bunch of freshman questions, like what time of year is best? Are some parts of Monatana better than others? I don't expect directions to your favorite spot, but a region and a habitat decription would be great. Anybody in Montana selling reputable beagles? It looks like a whole lot of fun, but the intial learning curve with purchasing and training up a beagle(s) looks a little steep. I've been around cat hounds quite a bit, and a few coon hounds in my youth, but I'm not a hound trainer. Is there anyplace I can go watch a pack run?

Any tips or early advice, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

found this link on a Google search

http://www.beagleswest.com/

Don't know anything about them except for what the web site says.
Looks like their emphasis may be on pet quality dogs rather the hunting dogs.
It wouldn't hurt to check them out, as they do refer to hunting beagles a couple of times.
They may be able to put you in touch with other rabbit hunters using beagles in your area.

Good Luck!

Many thanks. Maybe I'll give these folks a call. I'm more interested in a hunting than I am anything else, but I'm sure there are breeders who breed for both. Thanks again.

All best,
