My female is 10 months old and we are in good deer country. We have alot of cottantails to. She was circling rabbits when she was 4 months old. Only one time has she chased something that wasn't a rabbit and it was a Pheasant in some cattails.. I'm pretty sure we have crossed a few fairly fresh deer tracks and she hasn't yet followed the scent. She is hooked on rabbits BIG TIME and I think that whenever she gets in the truck with me she is allready thinking rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. Is there still a chance that she could or would pursue deer?
If so, what is the best way to break them from doing it?

There is always a chance usually the more that you can keep her mind on rabbits the better. The best way to ensure that it never happens or to ensure that if it does you can send the message is to buy a shock collar. The good thing about it would be that she has run rabbits and have them on her mind. If she did decide to run something else and you hit her with the collar then she should get the message that anything other than a rabbit is bad.

There is still a chance she might take a deer if the conditions are right for it to happen. The best way to break her from it, if it happens, is to catch her on the line and tell her "no" stand on the line with her on the lead and if she tries to stick her nose in the track again tell her no again and shake her hard enough to hurt by the loose skin on the back of the neck. Once she gets the messsage take her away to find a rabbit and praise her when she runs the rabbit past you.

Thanks for the input. I think catching her on the line would be the best thing to do with Jessie.. When I do scold here she seems to take things to heart and does not repeat.. She is not shy at all but when I'm dissapointed in her for doing something wrong she understands like she is a person or something.. I had her out in 13inches of fairly fresh snow yesteday and she got us 5 rabbits... She is only 13 inches tall.. SHE LOVED IT and IT WAS GREAT!

just make sure the hound is on off game or you can ruin him.

Never let her run with any hound that isn't proven not to run trash and be cautious of deer bedded down jumping up in her face. I had a female that had not run deer in 4 1/2 yrs. She just didn't seem to care for them. One bad day with the wrong, deer running male changed all of that.

you can contact us fellas down south that run deer with beagles.it is leagal where i live, and we have alot of fun doing it!i know you like to run mainly rabbits but sometimes the little hounds want something bigger."ha ha"i do agree if you run them when they are young with seasoned dogs you will get better results,we do the samething with our deer beagles ,experience is the best teacher. just enjoy the little hounds that bring the sounds!
