When i was younger i remember some of the older houndsman had them on there dogs and then last week i was running coondawgs with some guys and two of them had them on. I got reminded about them today when reading a collar post. Anyways what im getting at is does anyone use these is there any pros and cons the main one i can see is taht they wont get chewed off, stink or wet. And the ones ive seen online have the name tag on them. My only question is how do you size them.

Also Im not talking about choker chains I am talking about something like this.

ANyway... I use slipcheck... there are no cons as far as I am concerned.
The clasps are very firm so not easily remove, very tough. Tim H of woodpont uses them
on all of his hounds as well.

I have his phone number at home... will post it at lunch. As for sizing he has Beagle, Coon Hound, Fox Hound...
I have always purchased the Beagle size and it has worked out...

you guys all posted while i was typing. and yes i am back just been real busy.

Size wise how old do you think id have to wait to order or are they adjustable. My patch female would be old enough shes almost a year and full grown but the two pups are 6 months the male is about her size but the female is a little smaller. Guess i could just order 3 or 4 since thats all ill need and then put them on when they get big enough...

If you have a hound with a lot of white in the collar area... you will get grey discoloration from the
collar... my Lemon and the Branko get this. But it washes out when bathed.

As pups... I do not close the clasps, seeing as they grow so fast you will have to be letting them out
regurlarly... IF they are too loose... the links move too much and wear down... two fingers between the
collar and the neck is the rule for proper fit. Chase and Hunter have had theirs for 3 years now, Twister for
two. I ordered 4 this past round, giving my three pups one and than a spare should I see a hound somewhere

Real benefit comes with the addition of shock collar... or if you trail them... no conflicting colors. You do
not wind up with a bunch of distractiong collars on yoor hound.

I will not use any other

I put them on my pups as soon as they were active and running around... if they get out and away from
home... if the person were honest... they would know how to get them back home again.

im lookin at there catalog they have to options one is the lifetime dog collar the other is the original slipcheck collar. which one do you use i jsut want to make sure that they are adjustable.

Chase and hunter still have 1 link loose and twister has two.
As the pups grow... I let the collar out... when they are done growing, if there is any excess I will cut it
off leaving on spare link (they put on weight in the off season)

last question and then im ordering. nickel or stainless, i dont know the difference. except ones more expensive

I just have name tags made locally with a hole in each end and go to the local hardware store and buy a link of the same chain that is sold for dog collars chain and two S metal clasp. They come in black or same color and material as chain. Cost all total about 1.00 per collar. All that you do is put the S clamps one on each side of the name tag and run the chain to the other half of the S clamp and squeeze them shut with a pair of pliars. leave the chain long and undo one half of the S clamp on the chain side and extend the chain as your dogs grow. When grown. I cut off the excess chain with wire pliars to fit the individual dog.

I've even done the same using all black S and black chain with copper name tags. Those really look good and don't leave the gray color on your dogs hair.

I don't like the big snaps to undo the collars on those that are sold. Unless you're a dog trader, how often do you take a collar off and on?Mine look much better and neater.

Easy do it yourself and takes about one minute to make.

Spend the extra couple of dollars and get the stainless chain. It will not tarnish and discolor the white on the dog's neck.

I have the stainless... they discolor... but do not tarnish....

Nickle is a plating and therefor can chip etc. go for the stainless. IHO that is the best route.
