Anyone ever use cedar posts for a starting pen? I wonder what the life on them would be?

steve i have never used cedar but my uncle has cattle and has always used them good sized ones he says you can get 10 to 15 years out of them, but he said you can get 30 years out of a 6 inch treated fence post but they are pretty expensive

Depends on the amount of Red in the cedar, all the part of the post that is white will rot in about 5-8 years, the red will be there a long time, I know where several are that have been around since I was a kid & thats some 43 years. look for some that have no more than a 1/2 inch of white around the red. You want to cut them off rocky or poor ground, the slower they grow, the redder they will be.
