Looking for stud dog... suggestions wanted ($100 reward)...

I've got a really nice female that I think is as solid a rabbit dog as I've seen in a long time. She's going to be bred as soon as she comes into heat -- approximately Feb. or March.
I'm looking for suggestions on suitable studs. Here's what I'm looking for in a male to breed to... a stud dog that comes from a family of hounds that can consistently handle tough going -- preferably tough snow going -- something along the lines of a 4 or 5 day old powdered snow; under 15 degrees -- and do it without a lot of extra mouth or any other serious faults. I'd like to make arrangements with the owner of a good, solid male from this family of hounds to watch him go, for two solid days, in late December or January on some tough snow going. If I like what I see, then I'll commit to up to a $400 stud fee with an extra $100 going to the fellow that introduces me to this dog.
The only requirements are these...
- *must be AKC registered
*must come from hounds that are consistent producers
*must have a truly superior nose and smart enough to use it correctly
*within a 10 hour drive of NH
*between 14 & 18" tall
*satisfactory conformation
*at least medium speed, or better
*stays close on checks
*gunned over regularly
*no other major faults
I don't care anything about field trial records or championships. I want to breed to a dog that can run steady, all year long, in good going and in terrible. I don't want any excuses about conditions, or hear how good he can run under certain conditions --
I want a dog that can run every day; not yesterday or tomorrow, but today. Please don't waste my time or yours recommending something that's not truly special, that I'll drive a long way to see and be disappointed with. I'd like to run my female with that male and see how he compares. If he cuts the mustard then it's a done deal. I'd like a return to the stud in case of a miss. You can see info. about the female
here.
Anyone wanting to contact me can reach me at #603-335-5279 or
mail@milleroutdoors.com, or leave a reply here.
Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Aw Swing, you beat me to it. I was going to recommend Jackson. Even though he's a little over 10 hours away, he's well worth the trip! I'm going to breed my blue Rambler female to him next year. She's double bred Indian Hills Majer on the bottom and Larsen's Stormie by Striker on the top. I'm waiting to make some more puppies like her. I think we just missed her mom. Maybe soon .....

No matter what the trial record or the reputation of the dog you must watch it run in those exact conditions. A hound that runs great in OH on cottontail, might not look so hot in Maine on hare with 6' of old snow. Or likewise. And consider that even if that stud can do it, will it be passed onto it's offspring? Up around your way is a dog named Branko's Red baba Don, although I never have seen him run, I have seen some outstanding bad codition noses on his offspring, and I am planning to use him in my breeding program. I have never heard anything but good said about him. That would be my first stop, right in your back yard. But as I mentioned, if at all possible, watch the offspring in your type of conditions. That is the only way to put the odds high in obtaining what your looking for. If I hunted the great white North, I dont think I'd breed to a dog from Florida, unless it was a snow bird...lol Good luck in your search.

The key here is to watch the dog for yourself as Chris is going to do. I am currently walking the same path on the same search. I live in NH and the winters here get cold and the snow gets deep. I can't choose my days to hunt and have to go when I can. I go everyday I can no matter what the conditions are. Registration papers make it nice on the re-sale or off spring, but I feed rabbit dogs. If I like it, I feed it papers or not and currently I have both. For over a year or so myself and a small group of hare hunters in the new england area have been trying to gather info and breed better beagles with big noses for our bad conditions. Pete from Snowshoe guide service and Chris the man who started this post inluded. I have looked at and ran with several dogs during this time, as has Pete and Chris and others in the group and not yet has there been a suitable dog. How ever day after day new names of great snow dogs come pouring in. It seem that everyone besides us has a good snow dog. Well I know thats not true, cause I have ran with some of them. Not trying to stur the pot, I just think our definition of a Snow Dog is different. If you have never actually owned a dog that could run on all conditions at all temps, you wouldn't know any better. It just becomes easy to say " Its to cold today" or "the scenting isn't good today". Balogna! I will not settle.

aaron i dont mind that names are poring in and rick G s comment about offspring of snow dogs is very good, id like to hear about any good young dogs that do it when its tough going. you know ive heard about several local grade dogs i will check them out . the problem is most the time nobody seems to know who they are out of. i would like to identify males that are producing these good young snow dogs and if there is a high percentage coming from same line thats where id like to breed or get a pup. there are super snow dogs out there. they may not reproduce at all. it is more imprtant to me what they reproduce than what they actually do when loking for a dog to breed to or buy a pup out of. im not disagreeing with you aaron except i did see some decent dogs the other day . they ran better than i expected for conditions. you may have misunderstood what i said. i didnt see these dogs run as much as i would have liked because of thick cedars and hare crosing narrow path out of site . they sounded great i think they did a great job ,i just wish i had actually seen more than i did. i know one thing if the guy said go ahead load in your truck i sure would have . i certainly didnt say they were unsuitable and i dont know where you got that from. not knowing the dogs its hard to tell by just listening. and when i do know dogs somtimes what i see is different than how it sounds. anyways its a big world out there there are a lot of great dogs that we may never look at. i do agree with you that one reason we hear aboutalot great snow dogs is lots of dogs do great on snow. if you dont live where there snow most the season you probably cant understand what aaron and chris and a whole lot of other guys are talking about. snow is easy some days if it get s below zero its not. if its crust and cold its not stuff like that. pete

I'm not trying to be funny or a wise guy, but how much snow does tennesse get? I've never been there, but I didnt know they got more than a couple inches every now and again. If they get snow I would be interested to hunt there if they have a good rabbit population. Thanks for the info.
