6 1/2 month old male pup..........????
I have a 6 1/2 month old male pup that is site chasing and running a scent trail (throwing good mouth) about 30-40 yards, to me this isn't to bad for a 6 1/2 month old pup, But I have a friend that is trying to talk me into giving up on him but I feel I should hang on to him, Friend says off him because he doesnt go with the other dogs much, he will go with the dogs but not far, This is my first time starting a pup on my own and was just wanting a 2nd opinion, I had this pup from 8 weeks old and put some time and heart into him, I am 90% positive that he will take off, friend agrees on this but says he will never pack do to him not going with my older dogs, He claims he should already be doing this, any thoughts ?

My friend is comparing him to my female (she is my best dog), He thinks because she has been doing it all since she was 8 months old that he should be farther ahead then what he is, My thoughts on that is every hound has its own personality, just because 1 does it dont mean they all will

That might be a little extreme but sometimes you have to ignore them.lol That's a fine looking dog and if I was you,I would give it every chance to run for you rather than someone else.Bobby Vest wrote:Find a new friend that know's something about a rabbit dog.

I had one last year that was 9 half months old before she went to packing i would hunt him another 4 months sounds like your friend hasnt trained many pups the ones that are independent at first dont depend on the other hounds pups start all sorts of ways at first
Re: 6 1/2 month old male pup..........????
keep trying. Put the pup on a rabbit let it run it for a good few minutes then turn loose one of the other dogs. see what happens. just try and brace for now. then add one more dog at a time slowly. see if that helps.

Runninhard I would like to apologize to you for being a smart ass. I didn't really mean it that way but the way I worded it wasn't necessary. I figured you would read between the lines and get what I meant. What I meant was he is giving you bad advice. You own a beautiful young hound that anyone would be proud to own. At 6 mo old I wouldn't even begin to make a decision on him. You could easily get rid of one of the best there is. I have said time and time again I have seen two brothers at one year old and I would give $1000.00 for one and wouldn't give $50.00 for the other. At 2 years old you see the same 2 dogs and it would be just the other way around. It takes a lot of time to see what some of these dogs are going to make. I know it's hard to wait very long on them sometime but you just never know unless you do. That's the reason you hear all the tales about someone buying a young hound that turns out to be a world beater for little or nothing. Believe it or not I have a sister that is sweet and intellegent, just goes to show you just never know unless you give them a chance.

Turn the other dogs loose and let them get a hot race going hold him back till he is plum tore up then let him loose and see what happens. Best advice I can give you is ignore what your buddy is saying hell the dog is only 61/2 months old. Got to have patience

First just let me say that is a fine lookin pup not really my color but super super good looks, second he might just be showing independance which is a good thing to me at 6months old if he's firin in runnin track 30-40yrds givin plenty of mouth i'd say he's well on his way, like was said in earlier post run him with just 1-2 dogs it also helps if you can kennel them close or together with what you are gonna run him with, helps some dogs pack when they are a little standoffish to strange dogs.Best of luck you got a nice lookin pup there hope he works out for you.

Something I learned a long time ago be careful whom you take advice from.
There is never a shortage of people ready to give you advice on a subject
they know little or nothing about. Some people will try giving advice on something
they have never done before. I don't think your friend has a clue what is going on.
At 6 1/2 months old the older dogs that know how to run a track may be moving out
a little to fast, your pup hasn't learned how to run a track yet an is just learning. I always
start my pups solo or with another pup, once they have the confidence to run a rabbit and
circle it then I start packing them at a 4 to 1 ratio. For every 4 times out solo I run them with another dog or 2 in a pack, eventually the desire should take over and they should go.
The pup has to feel comfortable running at that pace first, and be able to get some of the
track running with the more experienced dogs.
