This year will separated the die hards from the fair weather beaglers........If your looking to make an honest assesment of how your hounds stack up in the extremes, your getting plenty of opportunity. I.E....what kind of nose.....how much hunt/desire......

When asked, most guys believe they have hounds that can run in anything, but when the bad weather comes the common response is "running sucks" and "Im staying home".

Makes me wonder how many actually have snow dogs??

I don't mind the cold and snow, but this year the snow has been all powder. The rabbits won't run, you get a jump and it ends in 100 yrds at a hole. The rabbits sink down in the snow when typically this time of year they can sit on top of it.

It ain't good but I go every chance I can anyway. I feel like the dogs don't care what its doing out, they could care less about ice and snow, they just want to hunt. Makes me feel like I kinda owe it to them to get them out the kennel.

I try to run 7 days a week (I am laid off) in all weather, The only problem for me is the rabbits are not running ( deep snow), get them up and straight to a hole or pile
I dont know about all of you but I have never seen a dog run a rabbit that wont run ...

The running does suck but I'm going out anyway. The dogs don't get any tracks and I don't get any exercise if we're all sitting at home!!

Its been a long tough winter here in southern VT, many days it doesn't gotten above 10 or 15 degrees. We have been getting at least a foot of very powdery snow every week with a few inches every couple days. Not one day above freezing since early December. Our ten year old veteran is running real good as he always does just going slower and slower with the deep powder. The two ten month old pups are really trying hard and have a ton of heart. We get them out at least a couple times a week. I ran them yesterday and they did much better than they have been. We had a late snow so there was very few tracks and the rabbits were easy to jump. Those dam snowshoes are smart buggers they know that the running is tough on the hounds and they head for the highest mountain around. They like to run on the big drifts on the windy side of the hill to loose the dogs.
I don't envy you southern guys with them dam rabbits heading for the holes. Need some smoke bombs for them buggers. ha ha
Its seems the snowshoes rabbits have really moved into the thick heavy swamps with many rabbits showing up as the winter snow gets deeper.
We will be after them bunnies in the morning. Good luck to you

Come on Preacher. Just put an extra layer of clothes on and turn'em loose. When I met you this summer you were already dreading winter. We got three inches of sleet here and just got a couple inches of snow on top of that tonight, so hopefully they'll be able to get a sent tomarrow. We've only got about ten days of season left here in Missouri.
