In Rifle Zones . It is legal to hunt deer in the rifle zone with any caliber of firearm except a .22 caliber or smaller rimfire (rifle or handgun). I would not knowingly take my son afield and unlawfully teach him to pouch. A 223 is a legal caliber to use on deer

Way to go Jamie!! Did you think to snap any pics of the young lad with his first deer? If so I sure would like to see them. My oldest boy is a year away from being able to shoot his own deer and I can't wait.


And yes Jamie's got the law right...........I think you southern Michiganders forget there's a little more room between houses up our way...........at least in some areas anyway.

My boys just took hunter safety this month and the older one is able to deer hunt. I just had this discussion with my dad. He was going to get a .223 for my son but I too thought it was illegal. .223 is a .22 cal. I always thought a .243 was the smallest you could use but I never checked into it. I must have been wrong.

My dad just purchased a doe license for him because thats all he has seen this summer. Opening morning they saw 3 bucks and 0 doe. Go figure. He didn't let him shoot the bucks because he didn't have proper license. Now they have the buck license they have not seen any. Hopefully they will get something.

.223 is a .22 cal. I always thought a .243 was the smallest you could use but I never checked into it. I must have been wrong. No your not wrong 6mm or bigger.
