False Pregnacy in female?

Postby Mandi Schafer » Wed May 02, 2012 10:25 am

Ok so I bought this female around the end of march and noticed when I got her that her teats were sagging terribly and were very large like she was fixing to pup or had just weaned pups, she was also very large around... well I didnt think anything of it the guy told me she had been on automatic food for the past 6 months and she hadnt been ran in the past 6 or 7 months, he also told me that she was due in heat anytime in april, So anyways I started her on a diet and while she has lost a little bit of weight she hasnt lost very much , and ive had her on a quarter cup of food diet and have been running the crap out of her. Well like I said she hasnt lost much weight and her teats are still sagging badley.. she is 7 years old and she has been bred before a few times, I just thought to myself Id check her and anyways I squeezed a couple of her teats and she has white milk in them... Im a little disturbed here as ive never had a female that has went through a false pregnacy .. if that is in fact what she's going through, because she never came in heat in april either... but if she was having a falcy wouldnt she still come in heat? she wasnt supposed to of been around any other males and the guy told me this past week he really didnt know if she had come in when he had her or not. So im not sure what to do.. will it pass or do you think she is pregnant or what? I felt around on her belly and I didnt feel any puppies in there... and she has lost the lil bit of weight due to my cutting her back and running her.. but what do you guys think?

If she’s making milk and not having a false than she’s gunna have pups shortly. The last few days she will also loose all the hair around here teats. But If it is a false than a few different things could happen; she could go through all the phases with nesting, etc and even find a favorite toy that she will treat like a puppy, or she may just dry up.

A false pregnancy does funny things to a dog and effects every dog different. I picked up a 2.5 yr old GSP who was just showing sign for heat but had long teats like a old brued bitch, just after she started producing red blood she stopped than produced milk a few keeps later she dried up and all went back to normal other than her teats still look like a bitch that has had a few litters.

how long does this phase last .. because as far as I can tell she's had baggy teats and serious weight issues for a month now maybe just a little over...

I had a female that would have a false pregnancy after each heat cycle. She was very similar to what you described. Hers would start near the end of the heat cycle. She would gain weight, produce mild, she would even make a nest & put her tennis ball in it & tend to it like it was a pup (I sometimes leave tennis balls in the lot so they'll have something to occupy their time during the hot months when I only run once or twice a week). She did this 3 times total & they all took about 6 to 8 weeks to resolve. I had her to my vet & he said it was not really common but it was more common in females that had never been bred. Told me it was a very long shot but if I bred her it may stop them (something to do with hormones & that kinda stuff). I tried it & it worked. Had her 7 more years before she died & never had it happen again. Her cycles did become irregular after that though. May have came in 5-6 months for a few cycles then may have gone a year without one. The vet did say that false pregnancies did put the dog at a very high risk for endometriosis & pyometra due to the body preparing for a puppy that is not there.

From my experience an old female will have a false pregnancy on her last attempt to throw a litter.....meaning her LAST egg. Good luck on getting her to ever take again. That's usually a good sign that they are done.
