OK folks I need answers ........

Post by LR Patch »

OK folks I need answers ,
I knows it's been asked but here it is again , when to stop run'n a bred bitch ? She's 12 day out today ,it's been hot,dry & humid and appears the next 10 days will be more of the same & worse. She's in good shape and has been run 3 to 5 times per week 3 + hours each time . I've ran them at 3 or 4 days before whelping but not in this heat .Thinking to day will be her last run , all thoughts welcome , bring it .

Not that I am a expert Randy but she is close and healthy, Johns right lay her up and don't feed her more than normal.

After my females start showing good I run them by themselves so as not to put any stress on them trying to keep up.It's amazeing how slow a good dog that can move a rabbit will run when she is full of pups.Your a knowelageable houndsman follow your instincts.

I agree with everyone else; let her rest until the pups are here.

If you run her in this heat, knowing the style hound that she is, you are risking ruining her kidneys. The heat, plus pregnancy is a strain on the system. You could run her solo, IMO, when it is cool for a couple more weeks but I would quit after that.

the better shape they are in, the easier it is on them.

I try to run mine until 10 days or so before the due date. The better shape they are in the easier it will be on them. I make sure the female has a nice place to have her pups, keep her in shape and let her take care of things. I generally couldn't tell you what sex my pups are for about a week or so, I just don't fool with her or them. A dog should be able to have pups on her own without any trouble. Being in good condition is a big part of it. Some don't even let them have unsupervised sex, As we speak I have two out in the pen that are tied, I think they can accomplish the entire thing by themselves.

Thanks guys , your thoughts & info is always spot-on . It's been a few years since I've had pups this late in the year generally prefer March or April pups but don't have any control on her heat cycle .

If the dog is a finished dog what would be the point in running her at all in heated weather.

Once bred, I won't run at all regardless of weather. Not worth it.
