Over the years John gave me several dogs that most would try to sell and make good money just being a good guy trying to help a friend out. I feel empty and NUMB shock as he was first class. A tragic lose to his family and the sport of beagling. He will be missed as he was kinda like the Godfather of Canadian Large Pack Beagling to many and help many young men learn at his side.He was a true legend and gentleman.

Woww, I am overwhelmed with sadness to hear this, John and I became friends many years ago, we never met in person but exchanged many emails. he was a true houndsman. Monkman let people have dogs that many would have charged an arm and a leg for. He had a heart of gold and he will truly be missed. Rest in eternal peace old friend.

Very sorry to hear this.
I also heard of Monks generosity and trust to others.
When the pack calls across the great divide, you can bet the houndsman will follow...

Sad news Mr.Monkman seemed to be a very humble person.

This is how you know you are too.darn.busy. I am just learning of this. How very, very sad. Harry, my condolences - I know you and Johnnie were tight. I've enjoyed the few times I got to visit with him; I used to tease him about how he could look so scruffy but smell so good, lol. Musta been the sweet smoke. ;) Anyway, I've posted this video clip of Monk and I dirty dancing at Fundy before, but I'll post it again in case anyone wants to see what a fun playa John was even when he wasn't in the field. The sport has truly lost a character and a contributor. Omg I'm so saddened by this. It had been so long since I talked to him. But I am equally glad that he did not suffer long. Johnny enjoyed his life, and let a lot of others enjoy it, too.

Hate to hear this news! I never got the chance to meet or talk to him, but would have loved to! The beagling world has lost one of the greats! He bred'em right and I am proud to say that I have some of his blood in my kennels! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
