I like 20 ga. and #6 High Brass shells. Many of the guys use 12 ga. but it seems to tear the meat up more. :check:

Drummond is a great vacation place if you like fewer hare and longer races which suits me fine. Many people who rabbit hunt want lots of rabbits for shooting and that's ok too. Many stay on the mainland where the hare numbers are better and less pressured.
We also used the 20ga, #6.
Best wishes for your hare hunt, the foliage colours are beautiful in Oct.

Where I hare hunt in northern Maine and New Hampshire I like to use high brass #6's but I brought a friend up from Tn. one year and he was killing them with #8 dove loads that he had in his coat. If you're on em you're on em.

As far as gauge of shotgun it all depends.Know one fellow that really likes to participate in the run himself and he likes to work his way in on a circling hare and take him with a Thompson Contender 410 at close range.Considers it very sporting and I agree!
I think any gauge is acceptable.I carry an over/under 20 gauge.I've got a 12 gauge pump but it's too darn heavy to lug around in the rabbit woods.LOL

DRUMMOND HAS NO RABBITS LEFT I WOULD TRY BEAVER ISLAND
THEY HAD A SPECIAL ON TV THAT SAID THEIR NUMBERS WERE ON
THE INCREASE AND NEEDED TO DEPLETE THE POPULATION. ALSO YOU
DONT HAVE TO GO ACROSS THE BRIDGE TO GET THERE DEFINETLY A DESTINATION
FOR HARE HUNTERS.

My gun of choice is a 28ga. With #6 shot but anymore I prefer to load my Kodak play/sport with a 16gb micro sd card ;)

REDDOG 1---that is also my choice --hunting out of D. ALLEN camp --until the HARE gets so thick that the dogs can't keep a good run going I will use the little black box --alot easier to carry and when I fall over a dead fall I don't scratch it up      ;) ;) ;) ;)

Killed a lot of hare with a .410 single shot with 6 shot 3" shells.

Have heard tale of preferred load being 20ga 3inch ? I use .410 for cottontail can't see using it for hare I mean if you're good enough at getting in on them I guess so but, have been once before and used 20ga 2-3/4 #4's. My standard load for cottontail with the 20ga. Was curious to see if anyone would say 20ga 3inch.

For years I hunted with 20 guage #4 high brass out of ignorance. I purchased a Rem. 1100 this year and a knowledgable dealer mentioned how well that gun patterns 7 1/2 shot. After patterning a shotgun for the first time I realized what a big difference shot size matters in accuracy. I think the answer has more to do with what your gun shoots best rather than what is needed to kill a hare....

I was unaware of Drummonds shortage of hare. After 20 years of running their. I will still go back and just let my dogs run around and exercise wishing that the hare was not extinct their. I still plan on moving their in 12 years and maybe the hare population will be back as good as it was in October 2013.

Heard that. If you can stand to eat a hare you could probly eat a skunk! Dang cottontail in a turpintine marinade......yuk!
