Kind of new to trails but I seen a few things that really bother me.First thing mouthy dogs barking and never produced the rabbit.then two of them trees a squirrel with front paws on tree. Then my dog got a couple of checks and then on the 3rd check rabbit went into brush pile all the dogs were piled up trying to get threw so my dog went around and pick it up and took it on.Then they called her out so I picked her up. They said she was skiting ,does that sound right?Or they did not like how fast my 11 1/2 female was.

There are some Brace clubs that do place style before accomplishment. Some want a very slow hound that walks a track. A dog that steps around another hound by 6" can be picked up for being "rough". There are different styles in all formats to include SPO and Large pack. Some SPO clubs run very conservative tight line running dogs, others run very fast hard hitting dogs. If you contact the clubs prior to attending you can usually get an idea of the style/speed they run. Generally most clubs within an Association or Federation run a similar style hound.

If the hound ran around the brush pile, it was cheating. Doesn't sound like it had anything to do with speed...

Prob skirting is what they said and yes that would be the definition of skirting in gun dog brace format. I have only ever been to two and both were at my home club that I was helping work at. They are confusing as all heck with there high braces and hounds and moving up and down and etc... Now if you did that in mid west/spo ibga/spo or even any of the formats of spo or large pack you wouldn't have been picked up right away but still most likely would have been noted by judges.

thats funny, mine swung around a brush pile at a trial a couple weeks ago, while the others went thru it, she got 25 points for a check, and rightfully so. It's all in the format and style of dog that format promotes, and what the rules allow. Gun runner stated their were six dogs in the cast, so not sure what format he was running in , I'm not aware of any Progressive Pack trials in Maryland, and the subject line says "brace question" not aware of brace trails running 6 in a cast? More info is needed.

I'm pretty sure he is talking about the final Six dogs left in a akc gun dog brace format. 3 braces of two dogs each.

Like I said New to this I believe it was brace. There was 17 dogs they broke them down to 3 groups 2 six pack and a five pack. I like a hard hunting dog that will drive the he'll out out of the rabbit's and no they are not the cleanest dog but they will bring him back around in a hurry. When they bark there is a rabbit no off game,I was surprised that they let dogs pop off and run off game. As far as running around the brush pile that is what I would have done if I could not get threw. Not mad for loosening but do not understand what they call a rabbit dog.

In SPO that is a huge deducion they want the dogs staying on the line when dogs start skurting like that the pack don't run as smooth. A lot of times older dogs skurt pilesbecause they get rabbit wise and know the rabbit came out the other side.

Did they have a shortage of judges? Seems a better break would have been one cast of five, three casts of four.

There is SPO brace which is a pretty quick dog which is normally what everyone up here runs in the reguler SPO trials the only difference is that they are run in in brace, they keeping running two dogs at a time untel they come up with a winner. Then there is gundog brace which I believe is the Walkie/talkie stuff. Which one did you attend? Other then that it is hard to judge what your saying with out being there and seeing it. If the dogs constantly leaves the trail and swing out to get the line in front of the other dogs then yes that is swinging.....DH

Not sure what you guys call a Walkie Talkie dog but this is a Gun Dog Brace Trial I ran in this Week end. They ran the dogs in Trio the first series. Anytime there are more than 21 dogs they have the option to run them in trio's or brace. After the first series they bring back 6 to 8 dogs being the highest scoring dogs. Second series the 1st. place dog runs against the 2nd. place dog. then 3rd. runs against the 4th. and so on. They go through that and then move on to the next series. You can keep moving up until you run into a dog that has defeated you. You never can move up past a dog that has defeated you. Here is a couple clips of the style of dog thaat you will usually see at these trials.

I get my dog was swinging and it was small pack instead of brace. That fine if she was in the wrong so be it I will still feed her. It was all the popping off and no rabbit and treeing and squirrel that has me wondering what they call a rabbit dog.
