Being one of the original members and the youngest in the Magic City Beagle Club still going strong today with a running ground you would have to see to believe it as its so perfect.
Number one though has been seeing friends throughout the years in various beagle trials winning, becoming famous, and enjoying their fame, folks like you Maple Valley with your great Junie dog.
Enjoy hearing and seeing their names come up while hunting or on sites like this one when beaglers mention the old breeders dogs names found somewhere on their dogs papers, or their kennels name, or their personal names as most of them, dogs and men have gone on.
Interesting that their wives are never mentioned and I know many famous beaglers held time consuming jobs and their wives did most of the training and running of their dogs. Should of been a trophy or hall of fame for them!
J C, what an accomplishment and memories!

Re: Greatest Moment.
So true John, my wife travels with me to the trials and helps care for the dogs when I can't. She doesn't get to run with me a lot these days and my traveling will slow down for a little while with upcoming birth of my son and daughter, hopefully they follow in their daddy's shoes.Alabama John wrote:

Back around 1999 at Monticello KY hunt, had 5 pups for sale, little girl there fell in love with the runt of the litter, she asked how much and I told her, she left for a while, came back out with big puppy dog tears in her eyes and said momma( which was cooking lunch in he Club House) said they didn't have the money to buy a puppy, I went on to ask the little girl what we was having for Lunch and she said soupbeans, cornbread and a chunk of onion, so we worked up a trade, the pup for a plate of beans, when that little gal gave me a big hug and kiss on the cheek that s one of the greatest moments at a trial ..

Re: Greatest Moment.
In 1995 my son Zack was 6 years old and we attended the Hew Hampshire-Vermont Beagle Federation Derby Trial [ Large Pack on Hare ] at the Northfield Beagle Club in Vermont.I was entering two young dogs; 21 month old Robinson's Freewheelin Fancy out of I.F.C. Greenbriar's Birch Haven Merlin x Caledonia Missy and 13 month old Pemi River's Rock out of Green Mtn. Commander x Pemi River's Penelope.
Zach asked me if he could handle Rocky and I'd handle Fancy and I said sure.
We were into the 4'th hour of running and Fancy had already been picked up but Rocky was still down in the winners pack. There was a break down and Rocky picked a beautiful check and the judges called field trial.
When we got back to the clubhouse we found that Zack and Rocky were the winners! They took pics. of the placing dogs and you talk about a little kid with a BIG smile!
Zack turns 25 tomorrow and still reminds me that he won the biggest trophy in our kennel.

Re: Greatest Moment.
In 2006 world hunt Junie came up lame and didn't win it, 2007 he was prepared and run in tip shape he sealed his fate. Last cast world hunt, Sammy Wells was judging the pack was dialed in on a rabbit, with only seconds to go the ck was open. Junie nailed it. We all walked back to the truck and listened as Sammy read it off, My wife Shorty was there with me and it was awfully sweet. That was a great time in my life as well as great hunt. Ya know its stories such as these that made me come back. Winning is very special but the company is even sweeter.

I posted this awhile back, and my boy is now seven. But this is the beginning of the most memorable times I have had afield. He gets to take the shotgun along Dad this year. He has earned his chance. I hope to get it on video. Good topic.

My five year old son and I went on a morning hunt during our Christmas break with his hound Apollo. My son has been out with me to run dogs, but this is his first experience with me carrying a gun. I went through all of the safety instructions before we let Apollo loose and my son was very excited for the hunt. Apollo jumped a rabbit not more than five minutes after being turned loose and the chase was on. My son and I set up in a small clearing that the rabbits are known for crossing. He saw the rabbit coming right at us, but it turned in the thicket and did not pose a good shot for us. He said, "Why didn't you shoot?" I explained to him that it is best to wait on a good shot, as opposed to just taking a shot...there would be a better chance at Mr. Cottontail. Apollo ran the rabbit for another twenty minutes before we had another chance at him. The rabbit made a couple loops in the thickest part of the property, and my son and I stood on a path right next to the thicket. The rabbit must have read the script because here he came out on the path. I told my son to hold his ears and my 28 gauge side-by-side put him down. My boy was very excited and yelled, "We got him." We let Apollo run another rabbit that we said we were not going to shoot to end the day. I am very blessed. What a great day!
