short but awesome hunt sons first rabbit

Post by KyBeagleGuy09 »

My 12 year old son and i went out this morning took him to DQ for some breakfast and then for a short hunt. At first i didn't think we was gonna do any good the first drop there was another group of hunters i did not see so i caught our dogs Bonnie she is heavy T Rex bred,Ace who is straight out of Dino and a primetime female, our other male blue who is out of Switch A Gear, and my sons year old male pup Sarge he is out of Bonnie And Ace thats enough about the dogs.we go to another spot and turn loose bonnie goes in jumps bunny number 1 i am telling my son to get ready i am watching one way he is watching the other way it sounds if the dogs is driving it to where it is gonna cross on my side so i switched right quick with my boy and sure enough it comes streaking across the road about 10 yards in front of my son. I was not looking until i heard his little 20 gauge go boom i spun around to see a rabbit laying in the road I threw my hands in the air and a tear came to my eye my son picks it up and says dad my knees are shaking so bad. That is his first one and it was awesome we wound up jumping 3 more with the last one he shot at and missed so i did mop up duty for that one but we killed 2 in a couple hours but i will never forget my sons first rabbit.

He'll remember that for the rest of his life! Having his dad with him will make that memory that much better.

I tagged along with my dad and two uncles every Saturday and Sunday growing up. They just had hounds but they sure could run rabbits. Once I got old enough to carry a gun, Dad let me use his Model 12 and he used a .22 single shot. He always worried about the range. I don't remember when I killed my first. I used to jump shot by myself a lot. But I sure remember the dogs, Brownie and Queenie.

yeah it is amazing how something as small as killing a rabbit can make a man feel like a king but ill still never be able to describe what went through me when he killed that rabbit
