What is Rough?

Post by Remmy »

What is your definition?

I realize that one mans rough is another mans just right.

What makes you say "that hound is rough."

Thanks.

What I call rough is when a dog goes crazy in a check and just runs every where and when a pack of hounds is running the line the rabbit went some dogs will be out of line running the pack not even on the line the rabbit went I have seen this thats what I call rough. jmo

When the dog's main focus is the running the pack than the rabbit.

No check area, mouthy in the check, and when the pack is hammering a track and a dog is 50 yards off the line trying to cut the race instead of running the rabbit.

That would be a ME TOOER not a rough dog.

When a dog wants to just compete with the pack, not run a rabbit. He does anything to beat his litter mates. Causes a lot of checks. Rough dog!

Ok now said that way I can Kinda agree on the part of possibly creating checks. From first statement the way I read it was meaning they are just running the pack and not doing anything else if a dog is trying to beat the pack mates doesn't mean its ruff its just competitive. Any dog can run a pack and be a Me Tooer.

My personal opinion of a rough dog would be a dog that jumps out and skirts to the front or swings in the check are and doesn't come back to the point of loss, a dog that runs over the end barking due to pressure from rest of the pack, and also when in a check area a dog that with blow out in any direction whether the dog has it or not.

I like a dog that is very aggressive and wants to kick the other dogs :moon: but they have to have control and not a total idiot, if they want the front go get it but do it the right way run over the other dogs or make the turns and run up beside them not on the outside 10-20 yards. If a dog isn't competitive or a go getter then it won't get fed here.

All in all I just want a dog to follow the rabbit and stay as close as he can to it. Don't worry about his pack mates. A rough dog to me is when they could care less about the rabbit, all they want to be on the front. Only competitiveness I want a dog to have is to honor a pack. A great dog will get his share of the front.

A dog can be "rough" running solo.
Over running, not returning to pt. of loss.
Swinging out at the check and "gambling" to try and hit the line out ahead.
A rough hound usually can't circle a rabbit on its own.

Rough= Over running at the point of a turn, zig-zagging way off the line and running it by bits and pieces and never really having control of it, Loose check area, shooting out of the check area at the first wiff of scent before having the line and direction, Barking with out forward progress....This is what rough means to me. As far as how wide a check area should be and how much overrunning should be accepted? That depends on what you like. For me I like the check area to be about 15 feet, and then if not recovered there they should veture forward, overrunning? If they keep barking then any over running is no good for me, If they shut up and just pull over the end of the line then I would except 15 feet maybe a bit more ( as long as they snap back to where they lost it). Moving out of a check? Yes I want them to move out fast but not blow out of the check only to loose it again 10 feet later because they never had the line. Line control? I'd like them to stay in touch and run most of the line....That is just my opinion of what I consider rough...REPEAT-Just my opinion!

Thanks guys. That is sort of what I was thinking.

Any tips on tightening one up a bit?
