it is important that you have a pet crate when training a dog to be indoors. at first the dog should be in the crate EVERY TIME YOU CANT BE WITH HIM. it is time consuming and frustrating for sure. a dog does not like to mess up its immediate living space. so the confined quarters of the crate will prevent it from making messes there. the dog should be taken directly from the crate to the outside on a leash at first. allow it find places of preferance to make its messes. after you take the dog back inside you should be with it and watch it closely while its out of the crate. should it start to squat or lift its leg pick it up and take it ouside. reprimand the dog when it does that and then when it goes outside praise it for that. when you feed the dog immediately take it outside to the chosen favorite spot. give it time . keep the dog in the crate at night. take it outside as soon as you get up and again to its preferred spot. take the dog out every hour or so when if its a young pup. and put it in the crate when you cant watch it. you can plan on the dog being a year old or more before you know for sure it wont make mistakes. eventually the crate will become its safe haven. you dont have to keep the crate door closed. and if you consistantly take the dog out the same door each time, soon it will start going to that door and waiting for you to take it out... its going to take time. not going to happen over night. and once the dog gets to make a lot of messes in the house you may have a near impossible task on your hands. this is the way we do it with all our dogs hunting or not and we have great success
