The first time this happened was about a month after my pup started which would've been at about 6 months old he was running with one other dog and all at once he just quit the race and came off the hill like he was scared to death. He would act like he wanted to come to me and then kinda shy off! He would bark and just really just kinda run circles around me! The first time that happened I really thought he had got scared by something he seen but since then it has happened about 4 other times and every time it happens it's while he's running. Whatever is going on with him it only last a few min and then he's right back to normal. This pup just turned a year old and is really doing a nice job for his age so if anybody can help please feel free to post ! Thanks Chris

sure have! My older female had this happen as a pup. I thought the shocking collar was shorting out or something. Think it happened 3-4 different times. had a friend mention siezures but i never had her checked out. the past two years she hasnt had any at all so im hoping shes outgrown them.

Its similar to a sugar fit.
It may get worse as it gets warmer outside.
Sometimes they don't recognize you, and hide under the truck.

You can try giving him some honey, Gatorade, etc. before you run.

I wouldn't breed this dog as this is genetic.

I had that happen to one of my bear hounds and it too turned out to be seizures that was causing this. He would be the lead dog then on the gps showed him treeing or sitting and the other dogs would blow right passed him and about 30 mins later he would go back to where he started. I never seen him do it at the kennel but started doing it just after I loaded him in the truck when he was excited.

I agree with everyone else.....its genetics. I'm sure if you look into the parents you will find a history somewhere.

I seen it not to long ago. A friend was running his dog with my son and I and all of a sudden she came back started running around in circles and barking. She shyed away from us when we tried calling her. Finally she came to us. I started doing some research and everything pointed towards a "sugar fit", BUT I found a couple of articles that stated that infection could be the root cause. So I went and inspected the dog and found a thorn in her back foot that had poked a small hole on the top side and was oozing. Took her to the vet and sure enough she had a bad infection in her foot. We gave her about a weeks dose of antibiotic and so far no more problems (Knock on wood), it has been a couple of months. Before you just say it is a sugar fit make sure you inspect her for a thorn stuck into her feet that has infected it can cause the same effects. Hope this helps.

I appreciate the replies! I will defiantly look over him good when I get home to make sure I can't see any problems! I wonder if it is something to do with sugar if the vet could tell me that by drawing blood?

I had one act this way when it was young.I started giving it about a half portion of feed before I ran it.Seemed to help a lot.It outgrew it but would always be the first one to crash and run out of energy on a all day hunt.

Buddy of mine had one that did this. He would come running in and always jump up on the hood of the truck and go up and over and into the box. They bred him and he def passed it on to some of the pups.

Yes the blood test could tell you, but it would have to be drawn up almost immediately after it happened as blood sugar can return to normal levels after a meal, rest, etc. If your wanted to do the blood test I'd call your vet give them a heads up about the sistuation then once it happens catch him and head straight there be sure not to let him eat or drink anything before blood is drawn.

What are u feeding I had a female that did she grewout of it

I've been feeding purina dog chow for a while now and it seems to be doing a good job! He looks great and acts like he feels that way to.Even after he does what I was telling you about earlier in 5 min or so he is fine and right back tearing the hill down so I don't know what's going on.

The only way to tell if it is blood sugar is to draw the blood in the field. Especially if he's fine after 5 minutes. Try giving him some karo syrup about every 30 to 45 min. Then if he doesn't have any problems you will know it is blood sugar. Some dogs will burn thru blood sugar faster than they should. Had that problem with an English Setter back when I grouse hunted but he didn't act as you have described. It sounds like your dog is in pain when this happens. The problem is finding what is causing the pain. Could be any number of things. I would take him to the vet for bloodwork if he was mine. Good luck and I hope you find out what's going on.
