I have some heavy Northway bred hounds in my kennel. I absolutely love their hunt, desire, and grit. I plan on line breeding some of these dogs, but if I need to come out with a outcross, what would add some foot and still gave good line control. I've seen guys who crossed them with turbo, ninja, T-Rex, etc. but out of y'all experiences what would y'all recommend.
I do attend trials, but first and foremost they gotta be good gundogs before anything else.

All opinions welcome. Just looking for some input. Thanks

IFC CEDAR BACK OLIVER produces line control with blazing speed. don't take my word for it ask people that own them. I've seen and ran with lots of them out of different bitches I own one and I am breeding a bitch to Oliver. on the 26th of this month. .tunes of , speed and control.

Check out Branko's Lonesome Super Nose in General Services! He can run the line real good and really lays the foot down for almost 10 years old. All my dogs either go back to northway or Branko stuff!

If you want to speed this line of dogs up, then that's what you need to find. Pure speed- period. your bitch will throw the line control. You'll have to start the whole litter cause not all of the pups will have the increased speed, maybe a couple. keep the best, sell or cull the rest. good luck!

If you have good line control and decent foot you may want to consider staying on course. It's very rare to add much foot and not sacrifice control.

The fast clean dogs I've seen were not the result of breeding for speed but rather breeding two clean dogs where 1 in the litter did it with confidence and more speed than the rest. Usually from lots of running time. These hounds generally don't produce speedy hounds, but hounds with the control. Breeding to a fast dog without out control can disrupt much of what you have in a single breeding.

Speed is easy to get. Control Is a whole other story. Even when I've tried to breed two dogs that had decent speed with control most out of the litter turned out to be just fast with no control. Of course the one out of the litter that ran the way I liked was usually the one I sold at 8 weeks. I would concentrate on breeding for control and then you can add speed as I think it is easier to get. I think what you are after is not something that comes out of one breeding but rather something you perfect over 3 or 4 breedings. I have learned to error on the concervative side and have pups with control but be a step slower then I like then to have all the speed with no control and balls to the wall all the time . That's just me though and if your willing to sacrifice control for more foot then that's ok too....dh

I had some success with crossing a linebred Patch male with a linebred Northway/Reffett's female. They had decent line control with the speed of the Patch hounds and the hunt, desire, and grit of the Northway. Like everyone has said, it's hard to add speed without sacrificing line control.

Give dirt road zipper a look. I got a couple males outa him that run a lot of rabbit and have plenty of foot.

i have a male that i have crossed with line bred northway/branko female and i have a male out of the cross i will run with anything out there he is a 13in.male with foot and line control.my male throw foot line control and extreme hunt. his name is grch grhbch lprch pkc ch redneck little joker i am going to pkc world tomorrow.him and two of his sons and a grandson to him will be there.thanks shawn

Cross in some blue ninja stuff, as close up as you can find and u should get just what your looking for. Probably add a little more intense hunt than what u have now.
