Anyone here familiar with or have experience hare hunting Sawyer county? Hare numbers ? Problem wolf area ?

The northern third to half of the state is wolf country.
Near what town are you looking at?

Contact is north of Winter about 30 mins. Has areas to hunt in lower Chequamegon forest ?? Never been there. The contact have, is a big game hunter / trapper. Owns no hounds, and doesn't hunt hare. Season is open year round ? Was told a late April to early May hunt would ensure better conditions ?

john way , all the information you have gotten seems to be spot on, I have never hunted that area but I have done some muskey trips over that way in cable and heyward area, and there is plenty of prime hare habitat there for sure. also the time of the year you are thinking about is right there for the best scenting conditions before the vegetation gets real thick,then and October are the best scenting conditions. one thing as swampman said that area has a well established wolf population, and that time of year I would pay attention to the Wisconsin dnr website on wolf predition, wolf den area can be a lot of trouble that time of year.

I hunt that area quite a bit. The wolf numbers are up. Please consider that the hare you take in April are bred and full of babies. The running is great on the males but they do go far and wide and don't always circle if they are out of their home area looking to breed. You might have to travel a mile or two to collect the hounds. If you get up in the Clam Lake area watch for the elk heard...

rockbottom , have you been up there this year at all and what time of the year do you hunt? only reason I ask is that I live like 3 hours east of there and the hare numbers seem to be up here this year ,just wondering what you thought the numbers were like there?

I was in northern Wisconsin once, the running was good, the snow was deep the hospitality, well lets just say I was taken to a bar and it was clearly announced that I was from Michigan. Granted there were only a few people in the bar but surprisingly they were all from WISCONSIN ! I spent that evening being harassed by a bunch of cheese heads.

Other than that, I had a wonderful time and someday I hope to do it again.

Rock Bottom, Unless something with sharp teeth , pointed ears and a long bushy tail shows up, theres a good possibility I would never chamber a round. At this point, the thrill is in the chase and the adventure. Nothing like a spring buck hare to take you into the next county !!!!

Well, you must have been to WI twice then.
I know the time you came to my cabin, the hospitality was second to none if I do say so myself.
Even my friends at Green Acres made you feel right at home by calling you a Michigander!
You may have not remembered clearly however because I remember a certain someone feeling, well, not so hot the next morning.
You are always welcome back buddy and I will do my best to make you feel right at home, again.

If your going to northern Wisconsin you just as well drive a few more hours north and come up to northern Minnesota and run with me, maybe we can get a big pack between the two of us to run .

Rowdy I have a open invite to any and all beaglers, friend or foe. I want to be able to see other peoples hounds run up here in my environment. So far I have only gotten Keith and BigRiver to make the trip. That's one of the down falls of living up here, while it's great to have all the woods to myself (Have never seen another beagle here) it's a down fall because I can't compare/evaluate my hounds to others in my back yard.
