Number of dogs?

Post by Just-us-kennel28 »

I know everybody will probably have a different answer, but what is the average amount of dogs y'all would keep in y'all's kennel. And how many males out of that number ?

When I had hunting dogs I had 17 and 3 of those were males.

I am starting over and I will have 3 total with one of these being a male. Do not know how long I will take to acquire 3.

My answer would be 6. One solid male the rest would be quality bitches

10 running dogs, right now 3 are males. I won't hesitate to drop a decent female for a good male.

I hunt only and like to have 3 or 4 dogs 3 running and 1 up and coming pup. I run all 15 inch males and kennel them all together . We only have hare up here and most of the time it helps to have the taller dogs for the deeper snow we get.and when they are kenneled all together they seem to get to hunting a little quicker they don't have to smell every ass or pis on every tire because they know who everybody is.lol

I usually keep 4 but have a litter coming and will keep one of those.Don't really need a 5'th dog but..... couldn't resist making the cross.I'd say 5 is my limit ,as someone else mentioned I only like to keep what I can do justice to as to running, caring for them and affording them.
I keep only females and they range in age from 10 months to eight years with a couple of years between each dog.I'm primarily a gun hunter/pleasure runner and this seems to give me a nice well rounded out pack.

The best situation that I have found is me and two buddies keep from 2-6 dogs each and usually have 8 -20 between us that way we have plenty of time , money and room for dogs and don't have to go out looking for stud dogs or puppies often. it works out really nice cause you know the papers are straight , dogs are what you say they are. know their strengths and weaknesses and have dogs to run. This year im going to be heavy on young dogs and they get laid off in the fall so im probably going to farm one out to them to run . it works out well
