Herbie left to pound bunnies in the sky. Kidney failure sucks. I have learned a lot since his illness. I won't run in any heat and will not give dogs hi protein feed. Kidney failure starts yr to two befor you know it or it shows up. I lost hell of a dog to it. R.I.p herb

Sorry to hear of your loss Foxxy. I continue to tell folks about dog feed and the rip offs that the manufacturers use to steal people's money. All that is needed for adult maintenance for any dog is 18% protein and 5% fat BUT for growing dogs and females that are reproducing it jumps up to 22% fat and 8% fat. Of course there are other minimal ingredients that must be meet to met the AAFCO standards which are the ONLY ones for dog feed. There are NO USDA/FDA regulations other than listing the ingredients in descending order of predominance. I would think that 24/20 feed would not be that "hot" for dogs that are being ran any at all but for those sitting in a pen it is too much, even though that is what I feed. I have seen thousands of meat animals fed high protein feeds and it is very common to see livers and kidneys burned up. Again Foxxy am so sorry for your loss especially due to kidney failure as I too have had this happen. What I witnessed was that it just creeps up on the dog, one day out of the clear blue sky they are lethargic and not eating very good and in a short period of time they are gone. My male laid with his head just sticking out of the dog house and he wouldn't even come out to eat or drink. He didn't last but a few days from the time I noticed him being lethargic until he was done.

I had one earlier this spring go lethargic and quit eating at 9 yrs old, has spent his life on 30/20 during winter and 26/18 in the offseason. Got him to the vet and his billirum (sp?) tested at 11x over the top of the acceptable range. Got him on some anti-nausea medication and antiboitics and after a few days he was able to digest food again and pulled out of it. He's been my housedog since and I'm thankful for the days we still have him. Hate to hear about your loss and wish you best of luck in the future.

Sounds like your dog with the elevated bilirubin count had an acute liver infection and your vet got it corrected with antibiotics. Luckily it responded to antibiotics where liver degeneration over a period of time feeding hot, high protein feeds, would not.
