coyote trapping

Post by beaglestotrack »

I have been having problems with coyotes pulling out of my one and a half and one in three quarter footholds. I just put new springs on them this year and was wondering if anyonehad any ideas on how to keep these yotes in the traps. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong

I use 1 and 3/4 and number 2's. Are you using jerk springs ?

What is a jerk spring? Is that the spring that goes on the chain? If so I am not

Also you can shorten the length of the tie to keep from the coyote from doing a run and jerk on the trap.

Yup, sounds like he's getting too much of a lunge. Also make sure you have your trap bedded absolutely solid with a crisp release--no creep on the pan. You may be getting a poor foot catch. Hope all the advice helps.

I have noticed that my pants have a little creep in them so I looked up how to modify them

I like to file a square notch where the dog latches. I also file the little nipple on the end of the pan release flat. Tighten the screw to adjust the pan tension. You want the trap to fire as soon as there's enough pressure/weight to spring the trap. I think that will solve a lot of your troubles.

You want your chain short but not too short. If it's too short the yote can pump his back leg straight up and pull out that way. You want your chain to be about 10 inches long including 2 swivels. ALWAYS double stake for a yote!!!!
Set your trap pan tension to about 2 pounds of pressure. That way a yote has a little weight on his foot before the trap sets. This will insure a good deep foothold.
1 3/4 will hold just fine.
2 would be better.

I had just the chains that come on the trap I am boiling chain now and gona add on the traps. I will also throw a couple swivials on as well. I already lightened the tension of the pans I got both my thums in the process had to stand in the darn trap to get them out lol springs seem to be good lol

I trapped many coyotes in ohio. 1 3/4 to #2 with offset jaws. 6 to 8 inch chain. Double staked. Don't hardly ever lose one. Also can buy beefed up traps with laminated jaws and welded d rings on the bottom of trap. Coyotes can due some serious damage to traps. Good luck with the canines

If it was me and I was trapping foxes with yotes in the same area I would use 1 3/4 traps for everything.
