There are calls that are going to be disliked by people, some right or wrong. The bottom line is that judges, at some point, are going to have to use their own discretion.
I don't know what happened, and I am not claiming to know. What I do know is that Matt gave 100 % effort judging.
I also believe this is the number one reason it is so difficult to get judges.
I umpire high school baseball games in the spring, so I have heard it all.
Others can't take it.

I used to trial UKC coonhounds but never beagles. If this was a question in the field aren't there measures to address it? In night hunts you put a question mark on the scorecard and go to the master of hounds with it. Once addressed and your still not satisified you can then file a complaint or protest to UKC.
