Best excuses for dogs not running

Post by Bunnycide »

Over the years Ive heard some real lame excuses for the reason beagles cant run rabbits on a particular day.. Here are some of my favorites ,, just wondering if you guys have any to add to the list.
1.The leaves havent gone through that souring stage yet.And still smell to strong. 2. The leaves havent settled yet and when the rabbits foot hits the leaf it turns it upside down and leaves the scent on the bottom of the leaf makeing it hard for the dog to smell.
3.The rabbit is running with its tail held down.
4.The barometer is falling.
5. The barometer is riseing.
6.There hasnt come a packing snow yet.. (something we rarely get here in nc.
7.The smelling just isnt good, {which for some dogs seems to be almost any day}
Its my contention that a good pack of dogs should do at least an acceptable job most any day from October to April here in N.C. Ofcourse there are some days thatll be better than others but if the weather is good enough for me to be out in then I figure the dogs should do reasonalby well..

Oh I forgot one of my all time favorites.. The Rabbit has stopped and licked the scent off his feet is why the dogs lost him...

excuse

Post by snowshoehareguide »

yup well you guys are my kind of guys but you arent real good at excuses. ive heard so many excuses i never name them i just give them numbers , why do you think dog cant run ? i say #18 or #99 ive often thought about writing a book on excuses but it would be out dated so fast. theres just so many . ill tell you just one of the best i ever heard. we were cat hunting deep snow and pouring rain , tracks turning black instantly.was windy too . saw a cat feeding on a dead deer. this is a true story, my buddys dog wouldnt run it . when asked why what do you suppose he said. ? well a lot of obviosus excuses came to mind . too windy #9 too wet #7 tracks turning black #49 maybe even deep snow #23. but no not him . he pipes up my dogs too straight she wont run that cat it must smell like that deer. so you see you guys are just amateurs at making up excuses dogs too straight # 1012 when i was first thinking about book i was going to call it 101 excuses why my dog cant run today. boy was i naive. i already know 1012 see its just too hard to write a book like that and not have be out of date before it comes out. pete

black dirt you see in my above story it was my buddys dog that dint run . i am glad i didnt bring mine that day but nother excuse you guys forgot. left my best dog home. whyd i leave him home. too old , too tired ,too young, off his feed, ate too much ,just wormed , aint wormed him yet, i think he might have worms ,fleas ,ticks , , his feet are cut his tail is bleeding .she has pups, shes in heat , she might be coming in heat , hes dead is a good one thats final, all dogs get better after theyre dead, ive see some ok dogs become legends , 101 excuses would be easy , 1001 your getting there. i think i left my best dog home is a good one ive used that one alot myself. but i left my best dog home cause hes dead . thats a great excuse. who can dispute it. i just know he would run today. i saw on tv eskimoes have 600 words for ice . i thought this was amazing but thats before i thought of how many words i have for snow and how many excuses ive heard why dogs cant run. sometimes when i think its going to be a great day to run i get real depressed . i think if dogs dont run today what can we use for an excuse. pete

"I thought I saw some coyote tracks back a while ago. The darn things have cleaned all the rabbits out of the area."

or

"The dog knows that if he starts trailing too soon, that we'll shoot our limit quick and he'll have to stop hunting early."

excuses

My favorite is" the rabbit must have got mud on his feet". Now what in the Sam Hill does that have to do with the dog not being able to smell him.(LOL)

Another good one is" the rabbit must have went in a hole" because my dogs wouldn't come back that easy.

I saw hundreds of dogs in East Tenn. When the ground was thawing and the top would be real sticky where you could see the rabbit tracks in the the East TN red clay and I can assure you when that rabbit gets some of that red clay stuck on the bottom of his feet that nobodys dog is going track it until it wears some of the clay off its feet . I saw It New Years Day. Rabbit ran across a plowed feild shotly after the sun had melted the surface of the ground with 6 dogs in hot pursuit and not all of them were mine either I told the other two hunters that that track would end near the center or upper park of that feild and they laughed , to make a long story short when the dogs lost the rabbit just before the center of the feild I called my oldest dog about 35 feet up into the next feild she finally picked it back up for the race but none of the dogs could find it down there, we let them search for about five minutes but they could not find it. If the ground is thawing and its red clay and they run down a cow path or in plowed ground you got problems. I saw these same dogs track a rabbit down a paved country road the same day and never miss a track. So watch for that one it can and does happen often I may add.[/i]

I had this happen at a trial a couple weeks ago.The dogs were driving a rabbit fairly well.We watched the rabbit come right at us then it saw us and made a sharp turn. The dogs were pouring it on that rabbit so much so they overran it.Not my dog of course!(lol)The dogs were in the check area. Then a old timer piped up and said did you see that?See what another trialer said? That darn rabbit just shut it's scent off!I wanted to fall on the groung and roll around laughing when I heard this! I didn't because I was taught to respect other people. But I thought to myself how could any intelligent human believe this.Oh well it sure was funny though.Oh,by the way he never said anything when the check was made and the dogs were on there way.Maybe after losing the dogs the rabbit felt compelled to turn it's scent back on.
