You guys are taking this way out of context. I would never put them down. I actually would like to see them go to someone that could run them in a very small pack or braced. Someone could definitely still use these dogs. I am not being fair to them by trying to make them run in a large pack of younger hounds. Nor is it fair to let them sit in my kennels to just eat drink water and wait to die....i was just seeing what other people do when their hounds get older. I see alot of people keep them around. You guys must live in the country with alot of room to keep alot of dogs..wish i had more room I'd build a another kennel for new dogs

Trouble is with giving away an older dog also comes high vet bills. Do you really want to do that to someone? If you don't want to keep them till they die, I suggest selling at a younger age to someone who will. Jmho. But that's just me, trying to think of others besides myself.
Thanks,
Bob

I sure hope when/if I'm in that condition, my family is not reluctant to pull the plug on me. Sometimes life is more misery than dying.

Back to the subject, my buddy who gun hunts always gives his aging dogs to someone who hunts slower dogs. I have taken several and given to elderly hunters. I've got one in my backyard now that is over eleven. He is one that I sold to him as a pup. I had another of his that drowned at age ten. She got into a creek and was confused,. She swam against the current until she went under. I'm not reluctant to have one put down though, if I think it is in pain.

Someone on this board was looking for an older dog to run a pup with a few weeks ago. Might have been in the adult dogs for sale section.

After 11 years of living in an outside kennel, and busting her tail for me, this is where Ruby ended up. Gives me an open kennel for the new pup.

"Someone on this board was looking for an older dog to run a pup with a few weeks ago. Might have been in the adult dogs for sale section." That sounds like the perfect solution.

I have one that's getting up in years and Katie will have a spot in the kennel until she goes. She has lost a step, but is great at showing young dogs the ropes.

Joey I would break your pack up into two groups run the young and run the old how you do that is up to you. I have a couple over ten years old, yes they have lose a step but the neigbors would hate for me to leave one home. They will go untill its not safe for them.

I agree. I don't keep them in my kennel past 5 or6, but I like to work with pups. Different strokes for different folks.

I agree with most when I had squirrel dogs and I had 17 those that hunted for me they stayed here till they died a natural death. I sold some that were better than I kept for personal use and I give some away that were as good or better than the ones I sold. Those that didn't hunt were culled from the gene pool, the bone yard has a few but it doesn't have any of the good ones. I have three beagles now that will never leave here whether they hunt or not, two females and a male, I do not plan on breeding them. Pleasure hunting only for me and my granddaughters.

Due to illness in the family I had to sell my squirrel dogs but I kept 3 that were past 10 in age they died here at my place.

I try to stagger my dogs. They are all close to 3 years apart so that I don't have more then one who is really up there in age and I always have a young one coming up to replace the old one. Right now I have an 11 year old, 7, 3 1/2 and a one 1 1/2. So I'm not bogged down with too many old dogs. Truthfully I'm looking to get down to just a couple of dogs. It has become a full time job caring for too many and I no longer have all that time to devote. But if they were good enough to keep till 10 then I owe it too them to let them live out there life here. If and when they are suffering or look to be in pain then I will have them put down ...,..,dh

One of the neat things about an Older Dog up in years is ya know where their gonna be and if they won't run off, just give em more space around the house or backyard.
Most aren't hyper getting into everything. So what I did When I had one at age 12, I just let him range around, and hang around The Kids, He never left The Yard or nothing & He was a joy to be around. He lasted another year and a half till a large Mass took over and I had to put him down.
I know Ya wanna free up Kennel Space, so I'm Sure there's somebody out there that will let em hangout at their place.
I'd throw it out there on Facebook and see what happens .
I've had people specifically ask for an older age dog from time to time .
Good Luck & take care Joey
