Question is, Are there many people out there using frozen semen from past great hounds to keep the blood up close. Who has done this. What great hounds out there were collected. Or maybe once there gone beaglers just rely on the next generation. I know it's a big thing in other breeds and coonhounds. What's out there.

shouldn't we be breeding to better the breed --I know the old dog gets better longer he has been dead ---

isn't the old dog what produced todays dog?

i heard branko has sperm from a few dogs frozen, do i know for a fact if this true no. but i heard jack and maybe heliprop with a few others are frozen. take some of that sperm and clown jack. wow what he has done for todays hounds.

I know of some straws from Ali-Baba. he was collected!

If its true that branko has jack of all trades straws.....what do u think about having a clone?????

I have talked to some well known breeders and they said the straws are not working out for some reason. The only time i know that it worked was the guy used like four straws for four straight days. We know it works on other breeds and animals but for whatever reason its not on the beagle. They have tried every way possible with no luck. Even with living stud dogs they have tried on the same bitch. With a straw no luck. Then the old fashion natural way and had healthy pups. Have tried different Vets, even the place they store it at and even surgical. My friend paid a lot of money for a straw off a well known stud and his female had NO PUPS. Best advice is to talk with a breeder or someone who has done it. Hope this helps everyone.

I don't know much about this aspect pertaining to dogs, but I do know a lot when it comes to cattle. With cattle if you can get a 75%-80% conception rate your doing something. In the cattle business it's strictly a numbers game take 100 heifers AI them, hope 80% catch. The farmer knows their not going to get every female to catch that's why they still throw the old herd bull out there to catch the ones that the AI missed. Now I also know that the anatomy of a cows reproductive system and the anatomy of a dogs are completely different but I think it would be safe to say that the conception percentage wouldn't be much different.

I have heard that it is not working out very good at all for beagles. For one reason or another, it sucks because I have some I would like to use but don't want to waste it if it is not going to work. Maybe the technology will get better in the future and we will have a higher success ratio.

This answers a question that I have been pondering...to collect or not?

Probably gonna save my money and evaluate as many young hounds as possible from the studs I like over the females I can breed...thanks for the post...good information!!

So I guess it's working for Coon hounds, but not Beagles. I'll talk to Dean Bitzel more this week. He did tell me recently that frozen semen from the 90's didn't work very good. Idk. I'll do some more research . I don't see why they would be any different. At my sister-in laws dairy farm we A I every year with great results. I'll do some more research and post back. Thanks guys

It seems reasonable the age of the hound being collected from would have a great effect on the viability of the sperm and being frozen would also take a toll. With the reduction, viability and handling,... timing and placement would be critical and may also reduce the chances.
It seems odds of a young promising hound being collected vers. an old famous hound would be a better rate at conception...jmho

Yes it does work on cattle and other breeds but the conception percentage is a lot different on beagles. Don't know why but it is. These breeders have been trying it for over 10 years with zero luck. Again talk with some that has done it and ask for the results.

I have AIed German Shorthairs and Labs with reasonable results. Tried it with Beagles and no luck. I used a reproduction specialist at Iowa State Vet Hospital.
