Distance Between Yourself and Hounds

Post by Budd »

Do most of you prefer staying up with your hounds or stand in central location and listen?

I had to think about this one. For me when I'm running alone I'm almost always within 100 yards unless they are really pounding one. However I run with an older bunch of guys (70+) a lot and they use atv's to keep up with the dogs so a lot of the time they get out further on us pretty quick when they are with me. Truthfully I think the biggest factor is if your running hare or cottontails when it comes to distance.

I like my dogs with me.I am different than a lot of hunters .I like to see that bed jump rabbit and stay right there till they bring it back. hes coming back if they will run him. Bang I ve got him.

I like to see that jump also....but I staywith the hounds as much as possible till I tire out anyhow lol./..I likew to se who works that check out right..what dog is keeping nthe track going when others lose it . ...see that intensitity they are searching for that check or what DOG is just standing there letting otherts find it .....that way I know what dog to move out and what to keep ...I like speed and drive but not crazy dogs swinging out 50 nyards at first loss of track ...and I don't want them standing there blowing a hole in the ground nand not going anywhere either. so that's why I stay as close as I can ..I like to see good hound work....the way I like it ..

I run mostly cottontail and hare on occasion . If running a pack of hounds i let them get out and work and do thier jobs. If running 1 i stay closer because that hound is being closely evaluated. When running i try to stay where i can see lines so i know who is doing good and bad. I will say since i bought garmin in Jan. i do let them range a little more because i know exactly where they are. I guess it is making me lazy?

If they get a rabbit up, I usually wait where they jumped it. Otherwise I try to sty relatively close to them, but I give them time to search out an area. It's a lot easier to know their location with GPS.

I like to stay far and quiet. It trains my dog to hunt further and doesn't look for me. You have to start with hard hunting dog and train them to hunt harder.
