Maryland legislators responded to their sportsmen constituents and put the brakes on a bill that would have removed the state wildlife agency’s authority to regulate bear populations.
House Bill 371, introduced by Delegate Barbara Frush, D-Beltsville, would have stripped the Maryland Department of Natural Resources of its authority to manage the state’s black bear population. The bill would have prohibited the agency from establishing a bear hunt, a management tool that helps keep bear populations healthy and residents safe.
The Assembly Environmental Matters Committee voted against the black bear hunting ban by a vote of 10 to 9. Two delegates did not vote.
On February 28, sportsmen helped defeat HB 372, an anti-trapping bill, which was before the Environmental Matters Committee. Without sportsmen’s strong opposition, HB 371 and HB 372 may have passed thus eliminating important wildlife management tools.
Sportsmen should call and thank those delegates that voted against removing black bears from the state’s list of game animals.
