Microsoft Aids Funding of Anti-Hunting Group

This is a good place to inform fellow hunters about bills and other legislation that may jeopardize our rights to hunt and free cast our hounds.

Anti-hunting group can’t hide record
By Chris Hustad,
Published Sunday, June 10, 2007
On June 2, The Forum released news of the recent controversy where Microsoft is funding the Humane Society of the United States. Since then I’ve been hounded by hate mail and threats.

What I’ve found is that in all but a couple of cases, the public is unaware of what the HSUS does at a national level. The policies of the HSUS go far beyond a local animal shelter and are an extremist anti-hunting group.

In the article, Michael Markarina, executive president of The Humane Society, based in Washington, claimed, “... the only hunting the group opposes is unsporting types such as canned hunts inside fences ... We believe many sportsmen agree with our position. We believe we are representing beliefs what most Americans share.”

This is a prime example of propaganda being used to shift focus away from their intent. They fight all forms of hunting, not just “unsporting types.”

Let me share with you some of the examples of their work:

- Led a 2006 ballot campaign to ban dove hunting in Michigan (contributing $1.6 million to the effort);

- Successfully lobbied for the cancellation of the 2006 New Jersey black bear hunt

- Opposes hunting on National Wildlife Refuges and is a plaintiff in an ongoing federal lawsuit to ban hunting on federal lands

- Took the lead in March 1999 in a lawsuit to end the spring snow goose conservation season

- The organization’s Wildlife Land Trust Program permanently bans hunting and trapping on properties that come under its control.

From a news release from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, “A recent decree from HSUS President Wayne Pacelle spells out which aspects of the traditional hunting lifestyle are next on the organization’s hit list. Pacelle referenced HSUS opposition to hunter recruitment campaigns that encourage newcomers and children to participate in outdoor sports.”

The policies of the HSUS are clearly stated online, and they state how they’re against predator control, trapping, hunting with dogs, ranching and more. If someone doesn’t believe in hunting in any way, shape, or form, I doubt this will have any effect. But it’s important that the public is aware of what this extremist group is all about outside of their local shelters.

I grew up in North Dakota, where the outdoors is a tradition. I find it disturbing that a North Dakota company such as Microsoft would support an extremist anti-hunting group, especially in a state where the outdoors is such an important role in our heritage. I would like to see more kids getting involved in the outdoors, but apparently it’s important for Microsoft to support an organization that opposes that practice.
