I have a beautiful pup (11 months old) that I think would do well on the bench if he would only stand. I have tried over and over. He is kind of hyper. What would you guys suggest?

Well at 11 mo it will be harder to get him to do it But make it a game it has to be fun and always have a treat ready for him when he does what you want! we usually Start ours out at 4 to 6 weeks standing and stacking them on the ground and such always make it FUN never Scold But you also have to be firm If you will grab the dog by the muzzle and shake it a little when they are misbehaving that seems to work on some. Others you have to grab them in the notch at the base of the jaw to keep em under control. If you have a chance Go to a show and have someone there show you how they hold thier dogs and see what tricks they use also.

I have a gyp right now that is the same way. The way I get her to stand still for me is to run her guts out. After running for awhile I put her on the tailgate of the truck and work with her. She stands real good for me now without running her first.

Read that thing TC is talking about. He sent it to me in an email last year or so and that is pretty much where I learned how to show a dog. Now I have my male that is almost a GRCH and is currently standing in the UKC top 10. I have also gotten good books from the library to become a show judge, just have to do my apprenticeship now. It is amazing what you can pick up from reading........

Allright Congrats Glad to hear it. See it aint so bad is it? I am really Glad to hear that you are going for your Licence We just recieved Our UKC bench judges licence for Beagles and Coonhounds this is what it is going to take to bring the beagle back to where it should be. With puppies, start it easy and simple, don't stress it too much, when they come to the age when you should start practicing for the ring (about four or five months) then you can start the real training. start by finding treats he REALLY likes or a favorite toy. Then practice with lead training. Have him follow you, talk to him, and give him treats. then when you stop, say his name or a command to stand such as stand, stay, stack, etc. and have him look at you. once he's styaed and has looked at you for a while, give him treats and lots of kisses. What works really well is to VERY excited, pretty soon, he'll love to do it for you when he knows you like. You can do this all the time, just keep it short and simple. and right before he get's tired and when he's still loving it stop. this will keep hima sking for more. Good luck in the ring!
