Just inherited an old model 670A. It needs some work like refinishing the stock and possibly having the barrel blued.
My question is would it be better to sand or chemically strip the stock and what type of finish is best suited for gun stocks.
I know the value of the gun is not that great but I would like to restore it so it can be passed on.
Any help from the gun buffs would be greatly appreciated, thanks , Dave

HAVE YOUR GUN SMITH SWEAT THE WOOD DOES A REAL NICE JOB.

I use very fine grit sand paper and then tung oil finish them. I usually wet sand the first coat in. It works really well and looks like factory finish when done.

Are any of the cold blue methods available worth the time or should I pay to get it hot blued.

The key to a good cold blue job is a very good degreasing. I usually scotch brite the area, removing any rust and old blueing then I degrease with Acetone and Alcohol. Birchwood Casey Super Blue is good and there are other brands that work well too.

I allways use a light sand paper to remove the old finish. I like to use a light walnut stain and then put about 8 to 10 coats of tung oil using a really fine wire pad after each coat. Makes a really tuff and nice finish.

Thanks for that link , never heard of easy off does it work like a stripper ?
By the way my son took two does with the 30.06 wednesday morning , dropped them both in their tracks.
